Glocal and indigenous solutions by Jody Bell

How can 'Glocal' Global and local be implemented in social work education and throughout social worker's careers so they become interchangeable?
How can indigenous solutions be drawn on to create worldwide common values?
Bearing these principles in mind, how can we develop ideas to begin to transform current accepted wisdom in social work education and throughout social worker's careers?

Such a good question. The sense of accepted wisdom itself is really contested. Professional intuition used to be widely discussed when I trained in the early 90s but doesn't seem to be discussed very often. Maybe I would add the word 'optimistic' as in what is the optimistic message that we can thread throughout people's careers (as against the narrative which is too often very gloomy!)

The point was about considering time scales - as against overly focusing on the immediate demands of the workplace in the present, or over the next couple of years. We reach back into the past but rarely question what will social workers need in 5, 10 or 15 years time? What will the workplace look like, what will communities look like and how will the world be operating by 2030 or 2035? The environmental question mirrors that - in that we need to connect individual behaviours in the here and now with impact further down the line.

I think it matters that we teach to question some of the traditional things LAs require -to deconstruct attachemnt theory for example and introduce research from an international perspctive and thus get students to question concepts. They may have to work in particular ways in practice but perhaps we just ask them to question everything.
