When I was younger, I went to daycare for most of the day. There, I remember experimenting on the playground (we would go outside every day) with an ant and a magnifying glass. I didn't really understand how it worked since I was just following what my friends were doing, but I remember really enjoying science during this time. During this age I also spent most of my time exploring outside.

One field trip that I had was when we went to the Science Center and did their "RiverQuest" program with my science teacher Mr. Andrews. This was on a boat which I remember thinking was super cool. We got to measure the river's water pH levels and also got to look at organisms under a microscope. The only downside was that the current was high that day so we were not able to actually go to the other rivers and see the differences. We just stayed tied to the dock. http://riverquest.org

The Last Field Trip before High School

This is the most negative science experience that I can remember. It was in 6th grade before I went into the high school. For our last middle school field trip, which everyone was looking forward to having, we went to the sewage treatment plant. As soon as my classmates and I heard this, we were bummed. Looking back, it was indeed interesting to learn about where our waste went, but I would have rather just spend a class period talking about it instead of actually visiting one. It stunk so bad and I just had an awful time. I remember the smell more than the information that I learned that day.

I was in Girl Scouts briefly and I remember we went on a trip to the zoo. We got to stay overnight and watch the zookeepers feed baby animals. They also talked to our troop about why the animals were at the zoo. I remember them saying that some of them were endangered and some were injured when they were found. The zookeepers were there to help them live a healthy life.

I looked forward to having Chemistry with Mrs. Tryon because I thought Chemistry was cool (at least according to movies). Personally, I did not enjoy memorizing the periodic table and the material for Chemistry was just really difficult for me to understand. However, I did enjoy the experiments and even got to light my hand on fire! (I don't remember exactly how it works but you put bubbles on your hand and just light it on fire and it goes away).

For 7th grade I had Mr. Johns for Earth Science. From this class, we learned about natural disasters which I was really interested in. However, most of my memories of this class were not too good since we just learned about rocks and identifying them. I was not interested at all in sedimentary rock and etc. The other science classes that I had during this time were taught by Miss Milan (I also had her later in high school). I really did not like her as a teacher since I felt judged by her. I remember doing a presentation about a telescope and almost crying. I don't remember if it was because she wasn't nice or I was just scared of her. I don't remember much about her class other than not finding enjoyment.

Continuing 8th grade, I had to take a mandatory STEM class. In this class I was partnered with my best friend, but Mr. McDermott moved our seats so I was unable to be with her. This was at the beginning of the year so the rest of the year I just did not enjoy the class. We did do some cool things like build water-powered cars but I don't remember being too interested in those or STEM in general (other classes got to build robots).

At Kent State, I knew I did not want to pursue any degree in science. I just did not have much of an interest in it. I did have to take science classes to meet the requirements but if it was up to me, I would not have taken some of those classes at all. However, I really enjoyed Psychology with Ms. S (I forget her name but she was an exceptional professor!) and Educational Psychology too. Ultimately I am glad that I took those classes but I did not care so much for Understanding Architecture or Physics in Entertainment and Art.

I currently tutor children ages 6, 7 and 9. We take breaks throughout the day and then in the afternoon I just babysit them. I get to watch them play and see their interactions with their environment. We go outside quite often and it is fun to watch them talk and make decisions about certain things (such as how tall can we build this snowman? How can we transport snow? Will the snowman last until summer?). They really enjoy science and exploration. This sparks my interest in science and want to learn how to become a better science teacher for them.

Here, I got to watch toddlers experiment with the water table, clay, flubber, and many other materials. I really enjoyed watching children explore the materials at hand and also wondered what would happen when they manipulated these materials.
