Many years ago, I was the king of Milan.

But my brother was a bad man: he stole my crown and sent me away on a very old boat. Now, I live on this lonely island with my daughter, Miranda.

I studied many secret books. Now, I can control the weather and the spirits. I have and a grumpy servant named Caliban who does the heavy work.

I’m not really a mean guy, I’m just... very dramatic. I want my enemies to say 'sorry' so I can finally go home.

I spend my time wearing a long cape and waving my magic staff. It’s a bit lonely here, but at least I am the boss. Once I finish my big plan, I think I will break my staff and stop doing magic forever.

I’m also very brave; today I saw a man for the first time, his name is Ferdinand. I think he’s wonderful, I’m not afraid of him, I want to know him and discover the world.

My father is a teacher to me, so I’m intelligent, but now I want to follow my heart and see this new world.

The drama and the artwork both show how a woman’s identity is still functional to the needs of the society or the needs of the family, and women appear as objects that have to become something for others. In both cases, femininity is a mask used to be accepted in a patriarchal and predefined social scheme.

The figure in this picture in the maxxi museum in rome looks lonely and excluded from the world, like Caliban in the tempest by shakespeare. The sad mask and the way he is sitting show his pain and inner conflict. i think that the halo on his head shows that even if he is seen as different by others, he still has dignity. The broken objects on the floor create a sense of confusion and remind the observer of his search for freedom and identity, even the conflict whit caliban make him sad, he still defend himself and his island from the bad magician. i see the golden egg like a symbol of hope.

We can connect the donkey in the boat to Caliban because both represent a natural force trapped in an artificial world. Just like the donkey is a creature of the earth now a on a man-made boat, Caliban is a 'natural' man forced to live under Prospero’s rules and language. The image of the donkey alone in the sea perfectly shows Caliban’s isolation; he is a prisoner on his own island, lost in a vast horizon without any power or control over his life. Ultimately, this picture is a powerful symbol of a different soul that is not understood by society and remains tragically out of place

This idea connects to Caliban in The Tempest because of the way he treats Miranda and the lack of respect he shows towards her. I think this artwork could help Caliban understand the importance of respecting women and seeing them as equal human beings.

For this reason, I believe this artwork could positively change Caliban’s attitude and help him become more aware and mature.

I am Caliban, and my character is not simple.

People see me as wild and rude, but inside I feel many things. I can be angry and full of hate, especially toward Prospero, because he made me a slave. I do not forget how he took my freedom, and this makes me bitter and rebellious.

But I am not only angry. I also have a gentle side. I love my island, and I feel a deep connection with nature. I can see beauty in small things, like sounds, wind, and dreams. Sometimes I speak in a poetic way, even if others do not expect it from me.

I can also be naive. I trust people too easily, like when I follow others who promise me freedom. This shows that I am not very wise, and I can be tricked.

So, I am a mix of different traits: I am emotional, sometimes violent, but also sensitive and capable of feeling beauty. I am not just a monster—I am human in my own way.

My condition can be compared to people in history who were controlled and oppressed during times of colonization, like the native populations encountered by explorers such as Christopher Columbus. Even today, I am similar to groups of people who are marginalized or treated as less important in society, whose voices are often ignored even if they have their own culture, dignity, and identity.

Ariel represent the ethereal, obedient and civilised spirit, while Calibano is earthly and rebellious. Ariel is the "good servant", Calibano the "rebel servant".

L’opera che mi ha fatto pensare ad Ariel è COMEDIAN.

Ariel è sempre prigioniero: prima del tronco di un pino, poi vincolato ai desideri di Prospero. Quella striscia di nastro adesivo grigio che blocca la banana al muro è la visualizzazione perfetta del vincolo forzato di una forza della natura(il frutto o ariel) a una volontà superiore.

É una lettura molto approfondita:la banana è Ariel che aspetta solo che il nastro si stacchi, per tornare a essere un semplice oggetto della natura, finalmente libero.

The photo shows kids playing together in simple happiness. Miranda never experienced this, she grew up in total isolation: she never had friends, classmates or playmates. Her only companion was her father, obsessed with his books and revenge, rather than games and laughter. The children in the picture find magic in simple things, Miranda is trapped in a place where even these simple joys are lonely. While these children look completely free, she is stuck. The island is her prison. I think this photo would change Miranda’s point of view about life because she would probably think that she never experienced the simple joy of playing.

On the front, the phrase “I am a saint” appears: here Prospero seems wise, educated, and fair, using magic to restore order and guide the other characters.

On the back, however, the phrase “I am a bastard” shows his harsher and more vengeful side. Prospero manipulates the others, tests them, and tries to control everything that happens on the island.

The two sides of the artwork therefore reflect Prospero’s double nature: on one hand a just and intelligent man, on the other a severe character full of resentment.

The moment a human interacts with this horse, it ceases to be free; the harness and the ropes are symbols of civilization’s force; this mirrors Caliban’s fate: Prospero arrived and took control and Caliban is subjected to his will, forced to serve “man” in his own home. Now, suspended in mid-air, the horse is a pathetic, miserable sight. A once powerful creature now completely helpless. If Caliban looked at this artwork he would probably feel like the horse, maybe he would want to start rebelling against Prospero.

​I look back, biting at my own tail just to make sure I am still real, still alive. They look at me and see a deformed beast, an error in their perfect geometry, like samething doesn't have to exist. But I was here before they laid down this floor, before they fenced in my world. And before would make me a slave.

This work made me think of Caliban because of the loneliness and emptiness that seems to reflect Caliban's soul.

For me these two images can shock Caliban. Caliban constantly struggles with the language imposed on him.These conflicting definitions of human identity reflect his internal conflict. He is a "monster" to others, but he feels like the master of the island. Seeing these writings so crudely would strike him as an open wound on his own ambiguous nature. 

I associated Ariel with this photograph by artist Paola Pivi, "Untitled (Donkey)," located at the Maxxi.

The photo shows a solitary donkey standing on a small blue motorboat. Ariel is a slave to her master, Prospero, who spends his life seeking freedom, and for her it would be ideal to isolate herself and detach herself from the land that Prospero represents. It seemed fitting to associate this photograph with Ariel because the donkey is a symbol of service to its master, a humble animal bound to hard work, almost enslaved. It is a "land" animal, trapped in an absurd situation, uprooted from its natural environment, and out of place just like Ariel. Ariel and the donkey experience a sense of inadequacy, like those forced into a role or situation that doesn't reflect their true nature, two subjects forced into a situation that doesn't belong to them, one they can't control, but they live it with resigned dignity.

I chose this photo because the two people are fighting. It is like Prospero and Caliban. This is mind breaking because Prospero sees his anger in the art. Now he knows that fighting is bad. He wants to change and be a better man
