Bussorah Street Pedestrian Count

The number of pedestrian entering Bussorah Street from about 12.58-1.08pm and 1.08-1.18pm was very similar. However the crowd started coming in from 1.18-1.28pm which shows a significant increase in the graph below. Hence we can estimate that 1.30pm is the peak hour for Bussorah Street. Therefore, according to my group's findings, since food shops are mostly found along this area, it seems food is what attracts tourists to kampong Glam as this area had the highest number of pedestrians.

Along Arab St pedestrian count

The number of pedestrians along arab street from 1:11 pm to 1:31 pm is 42. From 1:31 to 1:51 is 62 and from 1:51 pm to 2:11 is 78. Although the data seems to be increasing over the period, the number of pedestrians is very low compared to the number of pedestrians along Bussorah street which had above 100 pedestrians in a small period of time. Therefore according to my groups findings, since most of the shops along arab street are fabric shops, fabric does not seem to be the reason that tourists are attracted to ths area

Bussorah Street is filled with different types of cuisine from all around the world, jewellery shops, fabric shops, souvenir shop as well as convenience store it has a pleasant scenery of buildings from the past which are kept in tip-top conditions. Near the vicinity you will be able to find Masjid Sultan, a Malay mosque as well. All these attractions brought in a high number of pedestrian during peak hours. However having quite a high pedestrian count led to the stuffiness in the area as there were too many people. The crowd also brought in unwanted litter around the area.

The number of pedestrians along Haji Lane from 1.05 - 1.15pm is 63. From 1.15 - 1.25pm is 48 and from 1.25 - 1.35pm is 39, having altogether 150 pedestrians in 30 minutes. Therefore, according to my group's findings, this area had cafes mostly in the area and since this area had more pedestrians than Arab street in such short time, we conclude that food is what attracts tourists and other locals to Kampong Glam.

Arab street was filled with different types of shops but most of the shops were shops that sold different fabrics. The area did not have a lot of pedestrians and was not crowded at all. This cannot be due to the bad condition of the environment because according to the environmental perception survey it was found that it actually had pleasant surroundings without polluted air there were barely any abandoned buildings that were boarded up. As for the cleanliness there were not much litter and the buildings were not in ad condition.

Haji Lane is filled with cafes and bars which typically sell high-end western food and alcohol beverages. There are also some shops selling souveneirs and even a place to get a tattoo. Due to the prices and choices of food, Haji Lane is usually visited more by foreigners, where they would talk over a drink and burger which would be costly. Haji Lane's walls are also painted with Graffiti art, allowing youngsters and also tourists to take photos there. The fusion of old shophouses and graffiti walls brings out a traditional, yet modern vibe towards the people walking through the lane, and also makes the old shophouses feel new and 'fresh'. The air at one end of the lane smells like great Western food most of the time. However, some parts of the lane might be filled with unpleasant scent from rubbish bins or from the workers throwing rubbish. Rubbish around Haji Lane is well managed, other than the rubbish bags being left outside of shops and sometimes overflowing, making it unsightly. However, this place is quite clean and litter-free.

Conclusion and how we arrived to it

In conclusion, based on our findings, fabric is not what attracts tourists and other visitors but it is food and other cafes. We came to this conclusion by surveying the area of what type of shops were mostly found in the area whether it was shops that sold fabrics, jewelry, decorations or food. After that we surveyed the number of pedestrians in the area in a certain period of time and we found out that bussorah street and Haji lane had the most number of pedestrians. And most of the shops in the area sold food. we then surveyed the environment to see if the area is arab street were in bad condition thinking it would be the reason for the lack of pedestrians. However, all the areas did not have a problem with the environment whether it came to the cleanliness or the building being in bad condition. Therefore, food is the factor that attracts the crowd to Kampong Glam
