This week we started learning about best practice and the social contagion theory. I think the social contagion theory is really interesting because it relates to psychology and how different attitudes and behaviors pass through the social aspect of wellness. I'd like to learn more about how different kinds of wellness might pass between people and be more contagious than others.
I enjoyed the 5 minute activity breaks that asked us to reflect on ourselves and question what we would do in different scenarios.
For best practice, I learned this means using evidence based research that is credible and should be peer reviewed. I liked how the continuum addressed promising fad diets to emerging research to best practice. I think Best practice can best be used to make sure that as a professional we can avoid spreading misinformation and educate people on the facts.

1. What made you curious?

I liked brainstorming gaps in HPW that I want to know more about. Some ideas that made me curious were about regulating supplements, having more gyms with outdoor areas in Wisconsin and having a gym pass that works for multiple gyms for people who travel between cities. (basing this off how ski hills have the EpiPass out west that gets you into multiple resorts.)
I was also curious about learning about John Snow in Epi. because he figured out the spread of cholera in London and I think it would be cool to visit the famous water pump location when I'm London.

2. What about your thinking, learning, or work this week brought you the most satisfaction? Why?

I was most satisfied with how I finished assignments and readings more than a day before they were due, usually I am a very bad procrastinator. This allowed me to read in depth for Epidemiology and Psych.
I was also satisfied with how my classes went teaching gymnastics.

3. How did you help the class learn this week? If you feel you didn't add to class or feel the need to contribute more consider what can you do next week to help other learners more?

I helped answer another students questions about the online class and what to do but I think next week I could raise my hand more. This week, having an online class made it difficult to interact with other classmates.

Ideas can change the world, but only when coupled with influence - the ability to change hearts, minds, and behavior.- Muhammud Yunus
1. How can you interpret the information presented so far in the Influencer book to reflect on this statement? What principles help you agree or disagree with the statement?
You can have a good idea, but if you don't act on it and if you don't make the idea known then even if it is a really good idea, it won't turn into an action and therefore it won't create an impact.

2. What is your vision of wellness using the principals promoted in Workplace Wellness that Works book? Use Putnam's to imagine what is possible to create an innovative wellness program.
I think an innovative program should engage as many people as possible which requires song communication and the perception of permission to participate. It would use a needs assessment to offer quality programming. The management would listen to the "buy in" and participate in programs and also provide funding that would allow us to rework the space to make a more wellness orientated environment which would help influence the culture of the employees as well.

Can you identify one way all the material we have covered links together in a best, promising, or emerging practice methodology?
I think so far, I have learned that as someone in the field promoting others to be healthy we are all influencers and with that influence comes the responsibility that we make sure we are always using best practice and avoiding misinformation. For example, I think best practice uses Maslow's hierarchy in a variety of ways to support behavior change as it has been tested and used so often throughout psychology, behavior change and health promotion.

How can you use the six sources of influence to create your solution to this problem?
Personal Motivation is one of the six sources of influence and also our problem because we are trying to figure out exercise adherence. Motivation plays a huge rule. Most people already have the personal ability, but to help solve our problem we can create better accessibility so more people feel motivated to exercise. Harnessing social motivation is also super important because it holds people accountable to exercise and peer pressure. Social ability, might be something like having work out buddies to go work out with or team mates to play games and be active. Lastly, structural changes to increase exercise adherence might be taking the tv out of your room or making goals and rewarding yourself when you reach it.

What information to date has been covered in the Putnam book that can help guide your in group's investigation into your topic?
Avoiding terror tactics and focusing on strengths are two helpful tips. I also think culture plays one of the largest roles in exercise adherence. It shapes what people think to do for fun. Do they live in a neighborhood where everyone is walking their dog and taking their kids to the park in the evening or in an area where everyone goes to the bars or watches football all evening?

Why do I/we want to be an Influencer?” and “Who do I/we want to influence?
I think that just about everyone in this major is here because they want to help influence people to make healthy choices. I specifically want to be an influencer to promote exercise adherence because I think there is an enjoyable kind of exercise out there for anyone. I think it is in our human nature to want to move and be active so people just need to find the kind that works for them. For this, people need to also prioritize exercise which is hard to do because in our culture we value working all the time more than we value time for ourselves to do something like exercise. I want to help people break these habits. Exercise is also very important for weight management and other benefits so it will help reduce the obesity and other diseases in our population.
We want to focus on college students because we feel they need extra motivation to go work out. They no longer have a set schedule of sports practice or gym class like they did in high school with teammates or grades holding them accountable. This puts even more people at risk during college than high school so we want to intervene here to hopefully stave off the unhealthy habits that people develop in college and start an early intervention.

How does your Genius Hour project use or build social capital? Use specific ideas from the Influencer book to support your reflection?
We use social capita to not only educate people on exercise adherence and to provide information, but also to use social pressure by pairing our clients with a buddy and using that buddy to help hold them accountable, to cheer them on and to overcome challenges together.

Putnam Chapter 3:9 covers experiential learning and concepts involved in that model. How can you help those you want to change behaviors use the experiential learning theory and develop the growth mind set?
We need people to see setbacks as a challenge. Our clients can brainstorm and cheer each other on to overcome challenges rather than be barred by them. This helps to give them the growth mindset that they can make change, especially when they look at the online community and see those around them are also in a growth mindset and having success. Our goal is that as people begin exercising they will find what works for them and what doesn't. They will be able to ask questions and use our resources to make adjustments and then be able to enjoy their exercise which will make them likely to stick with it.

1. Focus and measure: To measure if we are making an impact on exercise adherence, we can survey Facebook followers and ask if they are meeting their goals and what they think of the Facebook page and what more we could do to help influence their health behaviors. We also want to focus our plan to greater include motivational interviewing as a feature of the Facebook group.
2. Vital behaviors: One of the vital behaviors we are addressing is the social aspect of exercising. Not everyone has a lifting buddy, but having one can make a workout more enjoyable and hold you accountable so that is a major key to exercise adherence.
3.Engage all six sources of influence: Although our project primarily on social motivation and social ability. We also have planned to help promote personal ability by giving exercise tips and ideas for home workouts for those who need ideas who don't have access to a gym. Personal motivation kind of connects with the social, by having a buddy it makes the undesirable workout more fun and desirable for the individual, but we can also work on sharing motivational images and workout reminders about the benefits of exercise to make it more desirable. As for structural motivation, the buddy helps with accountability and we can do shout outs to page members who want us to share their accomplishments of their goals which would be a form of recognition and reward. Lastly for structural ability, we may not be able to change much of their physical environment but in their online environment their Facebook feed will be full of reminders to workout, reasons to get healthy, people sharing their accomplishments and they will be part of an online community that promotes health.

How would you use this information to create a motivating way to get people to adopt the behavior you are addressing in your genius hour project?
In our genius hour project, we are trying to get people to continue doing exercise even months after they first start. As Putnam says, its easier to get going than to keep the behavior sustained. We know awareness or knowledge about how to workout isn't enough and that is why we have this social support network in place.
We also know that incentives don't usually work well for long term behaviors so the only "incentive" our program will be using is shoutout posts to those who accomplish their goals. For example, the posts will relate to goals and vital behaviors like making a weight goal, going to the gym on a regular schedule for a whole month or pushing themselves to try a new fitness class. This is more of a compliment rather than an object and it is meant to boost their pride, and show others their hard work too.
This makes their "why" have to come from their hearts which is why their friends and social support will help to motivate them. It is also where motivational interviews will play a key role. In these interviews, our clients will find their why's as they are asked why they want to lose weight or get in the gym or be active.

How would you use Putnam's ideas of "Creating Meaning" for the population you are targeting in the topic for your Genius hour? As the opening states, we have to help them know their "WHY." What of the many ideas presented this week help you get buying from your group?

To help our clients understand their why, we don't want incentives to be our primary focus. Instead, we want meaning to come from intrinsic motivation in the heart and from the social support around them. Some ways we will do this to promote buy-in will be to help individuals find an exercise buddy. This will hold them accountable and make the experience of exercise more enjoyable. We will also surround them in an online community were everyone is mostly in a growth mindset. Their online environment will change to be positive and to promote changes toward healthy habits. This will also help keep them motivated. The only incentive will be to get a "shout out" on the page for accomplishing their goals. This incentive is supposed to be recognition for their hard work, not just a prize to be won. Finally, we will help create meaning by using motivational interviewing so they find that meaning within themselves to continue working out and to pursue lifelong healthy habits.
