How the Age Created Child Labor

Children as young as six were forced to work in horrible conditions, work long hours, and get paid only small amounts. There were different conditions in different factories, in mills children rarely wore footwear, they had unsafe machines and could easily loose a finger or toe and quite as easily lose a foot or hand. If a child of older age, like 10+ had a younger sibling as young as 4 would have to bring them to "help" but they were not paid for their hard work. "Tiny babies of six years old with faces of sixty did an eight hour shift for ten cents a day." quoted from "Child Labor- 1900"

Child Labor Reform

Progressive Era reformers believed that child labor was dangerous to children and to society. They believed that children should be protected from harmful environments so that they would become healthy, productive adults. Their goals were to develop programs that would eliminate children's participation in industry and increase their involvement in education and extracurricular activities.

Prohibition: The Effect On Women

The prohibition was looked at by many women in the progressive/gilded age as "the root of many social problems". One of those problems being abuse on women and children from the men who came home in a drunken state, with no money to feed and support the family. Women wanted to believe that with prohibition would come less abuse and more of a family based environment.

What Is the historical Lesson of Prohibition

I think the lesson to be learned here is that as much as alcohol negatively affects society, it also creates many jobs, money and entertainment. We have to face the ugly fact that alcohol is a gigantic industry that so many people demand that it will always be a thing we have to control and deal with. History is repeating itself by people relying so much on alcohol, people let it take over their lives and it becomes a danger to society.

Business Owners During the Gilded Age

Many business owners made under the tabled deals with other businesses to con the people and other business out of money and make things more simple for themselfs. Major people, for example Rockefeller, took over certain industries by monopolizing and buying and running people out of business. In the end the public were always caught between making correct decisions on what they bought and who they bought from because it was easy and most of the time hard to detect getting cheated or tricked out of money.

The Learned Lesson from Business Workers

I feel that the lesson learned is that when one person such as Rockefeller takes over one whole industry it creates problems and become an unfair way to control people. if you own everything or have deals with other industries it can lead to the public to be forced to pay more to get things they need. It repeats in history because today industries still control certain prices and how people receive products. .

Being a Miner During the Gilded Age

Many families worked in mines during this period. It was a hard and straining job. Many deaths were caused and it was constantly causing injuries. They were living in homes provided by the owners of the mine, completely under control. They money they received, how they spent it, where they spent it, it was all controlled. Most every miner had given up on staying clean of dust and soot. It was a hard but short life for most miners.
The work conditions were not only poor, they didn't get paid much either.

Today we still have coal miners, they make a lot more money and have less hours though. Making $23.02 a hour would have been a dream to miners then. Safer conditions provided for miners today cause less deaths then they used to. I think America learned a lesson about the importance of safety and the importance of fair payment.
