Crisis, Trauma, and Mental Health by Wendy Monds

My name is Wendy Monds, and my current program of study is the M.A. in Mental Health and Wellness counseling and eventually, I would like to pursue my LPC. I graduated from Angelo State in 2018 with my Master’s in Guidance and Counseling and graduated from Liberty University in 2022 with my Doctor of Education in Curriculum and Instruction/Special Education. One goal that I have for this course is to learn more about crisis and trauma responses. As a school counselor, I have been involved in everything from helping a student deal with bullying issues to informing a coworker of her daughters death. In some situations, I feel like I have not received enough training to understand how to respond to the person dealing with the trauma. I hope to increase my understanding of how to do this.

The beginning of this class consisted of an introduction, insight into required readings, and an assessment of my previous knowledge. The information gained from the readings involved the discovery that almost half of all Americans will experience conditions that meet the criteria of a diagnosable mental health condition in their lifetime. I found this very interesting because there is still such a stigma with mental health.

One resource that I highlighted to be helpful is the SAMHSA Concept of Trauma and Guidance for a Trauma-Informed Approach. This resource was developed to create a thorough comprehension of trauma and a universally accepted and applicable trauma-informed approach across diverse service systems and stakeholder groups and is invaluable to those who work in the mental health field.

Creating a reference guide for mental health disorders has allowed me to gain comprehensive knowledge about these conditions. I've learned about their symptoms, risk factors, and helpful resources for each disorder. I have been able to deepen my understanding of the prevalence and impact these disorders can have on people’s lives. I have also been able to expand my knowledge of how important it is for early intervention. When conducting this research, I discovered many helpful resources.

For the developmental discussion on trauma, we discussed ACEs. The ACE studies offer valuable insight into the impact of childhood trauma, but they have limitations. While they provide a starting point, I believe a holistic approach, considering various factors, is essential for understanding individuals' experiences fully.

We also watched a documentary chosen by us. The documentary I chose to watch was "We are Columbine." Watching the documentary "We Are Columbine" provided a profound insight into the enduring impact of trauma. Through intimate interviews with survivors, the film showed raw emotions while partipants recounted their personal experiences with the tragedy. It was eye-opening to see the diverse responses to trauma between the survivors, from heightened vigilance to struggles with depression and avoidance behaviors. The documentary highlighted the significant academic, social, and emotional impacts they endured, including altered career paths and media scrutiny. Despite the school's efforts to provide counseling, many of the participants found it challenging to engage with therapeutic interventions. The film also depicted changes in school policies and environments post-tragedy, showing how it impacted the school community. As a future LPC, I recognize the importance of developing tailored treatment plans for survivors, incorporating trauma-focused therapies and collaborating with other professionals and support systems to facilitate healing and resilience. Ultimately, the documentary showed the resilience and strength within each survivor.

The ACA Code of Ethics is an important document for Licensed Professional Counselors as it is a fundamental framework for ethical conduct. Upholding the standards outlined in the code ensures that LPCs prioritize client welfare, maintain professional integrity, and guide decision-making in various counseling contexts. By adhering to the code, LPCs protect clients' rights, respect their autonomy, and promote their well-being. The code fosters ongoing professional development and self-reflection among counselors, encouraging continuous growth and improvement in their practice. The ACA Code of Ethics also regulates professional conduct within the counseling profession, providing a framework for accountability and addressing ethical violations.

The threat assessment includes analyzing various legal requirements and ethical considerations surrounding school safety, such as mandates for prevention measures, reporting obligations, and liability considerations. Additionally, we emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts among stakeholders, including law enforcement, mental health professionals, and community organizations. Our approach highlighted the need for comprehensive strategies that prioritize student welfare, cultural competence, and continuous improvement in violence prevention efforts.

Within the scope of practice of an LPC (Licensed Professional Counselor), the referral process involves several key steps. Initially, the LPC conducts an assessment to understand the client's needs and goals thoroughly. If the assessment reveals issues beyond the LPC's expertise or scope, such as medical, legal, or specialized treatment needs, the LPC discusses potential referrals with the client. This discussion includes explaining the rationale for the referral and addressing any concerns. The LPC collaborates with other professionals, such as medical doctors, psychiatrists, or social workers, to facilitate the referral process and ensure continuity of care. Additionally, the LPC assists the client in accessing the recommended services, coordinating appointments, and providing necessary documentation. Throughout this process, the LPC continues to monitor the client's progress and remains engaged in their care, offering ongoing support and adjustments to the treatment plan as needed.

Cultural competence is an important part of delivering responsive services in counseling and mental health professions. Cultural competence acknowledges the diversity of human experiences and recognizes that individuals from different cultural backgrounds may have unique perspectives, values, and needs. As a counselor, being culturally competent means understanding and respecting these differences, which is crucial for building trust and rapport with clients. It allows practitioners to create a safe and inclusive environment where clients feel understood and accepted, fostering a therapeutic alliance that facilitates healing and growth. Cultural competence also promotes effective communication and collaboration between clients and practitioners. By understanding the cultural context of a client's experiences, counselors can tailor their interventions to be more relevant and meaningful. This might involve incorporating culturally appropriate techniques, language, or metaphors into therapy sessions, which can enhance client engagement and treatment outcomes. Additionally, cultural competence enables practitioners to navigate sensitive issues such as stigma, discrimination, and cultural identity, empowering clients to explore and address these concerns in a supportive and nonjudgmental space.
