Teaching and Learning ‘Nano’ ConferenceI (Teaching and Learning ‘Nano’ Conference). I attended Teaching and Learning ‘Nano’ Conference on Wednesday 20th October at 10:30 am via Zoom link. Nano conferences are a series of short session for sharing practices and engaging in conversations around teaching and learning. It was great opportunity to hear from staff and students and learn from their practice during pandemic time. How to break the silence of cyber space and empower students in their learning was one of the things that caught my attention. I learned how to use different approaches (such as team teach and interactive activities in breakout rooms) to break the silence of cyber space and direct students’ attention to the discussion more than focusing on upcoming assessments. Pros and cons of online learning are discussed from the student’ point of view. Followed by discussion about blended learning, digital inclusion, and active learning. Speaker presented ideas on how to enhance connection between blended learning, digital inclusion, and active learning. Assessing the level of fluency of students when using digital media in academic context is very significant to achieve this connection. Research enrich learning (REL) was highlighted in this conference, we learned about good practices on research enhanced approaches to assessment, especially how to use CBiS library of research for further support on developing assessments.

As per the students feedback, I had some type of assurance that bringing real life examples made it much easier for the students to understand the complex environment of supply chain industry. Most of business subject will significantly benefit from linking the theory to the reality. The students were happy about the way I explained the subject materials and they felt comfortable on the personal level. This encourages me to keep on being friendly and patient. I also learned that adding even more of real examples and asking the students to analyse them will keep the students tuned inside the class.
In addition, increasing the time for group activities is a good way forward as the students wanted to be more interactive with each other.
