Who has been getting things right? : Staggering between Lucas and Krugman

The financial crisis in 2008 aroused controversies on diverse affairs about economics. Two Nobel prize laureates in economics, Robert Lucas and Paul Krugman, are two of the most prominent economists who had differing ideas on this crisis. While Lucas is a intransigent free market supporter, Krugman defends traditional Keynesian solution. Despite their clear differences, I will not judge which one of them got things right. I will just make it clear what their contrasting characteristics are. Those are the means they expressed their ideas, their basic perspectives on the government intervention, and their responses to the financial crisis.

First, I will talk about how they influenced the economic ideas of their age. Robert Lucas mainly had a effect on his era through his articles that were published in academic journals. With his esoteric mathematical formulas, he convinced economists in his time that conventional Keynesian idea was misleading. On the other hand, Paul Krugman carried a liberal torch through his lifetime by writing regular columns in the New York Times. Although his main contribution to economics rests in international trade, not macroeconomics or public policy, he still had a enormous impact on public opinion about macroeconomics problem with his lucid prose. Lucas and Krugman took distinguished roads to raise their voices to the public.

Secondly, they showed fundamental difference in their opinion when it comes to government intervention. Lucas strengthened the belief that government intervention is bound to fail. He demonstrated that economic agents could make rational choices of their own only when governments remain hands-off. Contrary to Lucas, Krugman defended traditional Keynesian solutions claiming that they definitely work in the short-term. Indeed, what he argued was that government can amend market failure, not that government should always control the whole market. Both of them also was different each other in their perspectives on government intervention.

Given these two divergent opinions they proposed contradicting views on the 2008 financial crisis. Lucas reprimanded the measures the Federal Reserve Bank took in 2008 because he believed that the bailout would mean the denial of laissez faire principles and cause shameful moral hazard of those who are to blame for this crisis in the end. Be that as it may, Krugman considered the financial crisis as evidence that the market could go astray without proper government regulation. He dismissed Lucas' argument and strongly publicized his idea that unless the government stepped in and stimulated the economy in order to get away from secular stagnation, the lives of people would remain devastated.

(Conclusion #1) Lucas' and Krugman's visions seem incompatible even though both of them are obstinate mainstream econoimsts who claim their methodology to be close to exact science. They differed in the way they affected the world, their views on government intervention and their opinion on the financial crisis in 2008. It is quite hard to reject one over the other. Both of them have some points and some fundamental blind spots. Conscientious and prudent debate for the time being is required. This mission is up to all of us. As John Maynard Keynes told us, "Practical men who believes themselves to be exempt from any intellectual influences are usually slaves of a defunct economist."

(Conclusion #2)Lucas propagated his antiKeynesiN opinion through complicated academic articles while Krugman expressed proKeynesian ideas through columns in a newspaper. They subsequently reaced conflicting positions. No one knows whose thoughts wouldI suppose Krugman would win the race. Actually his major academic achievement in international trade was possible because he tried to develop a mathematical model which was more firmly rooted in reality. Even if many of his columns were based on ad hoc assumptions in terms of an academician, he nevertheless succeeded in getting a lot of cogent and eloquent points that had to be respected in his columns. However, Lucas tended to come up with distorted facts that fit into his theory. Admittedly, my assertion is just tentative. This is too complicated a prediction that one cannot deal with in this short essay.

Cristiano Ronaldo VS Lionel Messi : Who is the greatest football player?

In a few months, there is going to be a big match, El Classico, in the Spanish premier league. El Classico is a match between the two top teams in Spanish football. This match always attracts the eyes of the world and brings discussion about who will be the man of the match. There are two top football
players in each team; Cristiano Ronaldo of Real Madrid and Lionel Messi of Barcelona and they are currently considered as best football players in the world. It, however, often brings a big controversy among the fans who is the best football player between Ronaldo and Messi. In my opinion, neither is vastly superior to the other but there are some differences and similarities in three important areas; dribbling, physical attribute and impact on a game which will be examined in this essay.

To begin with, dribbling style is one of the two football players' major attributes. When you look more closely, you can see that both players have totally different dribbling styles. For example, Messi usually likes to dribble in the center of the field and does not really use fabulous skills to go past players.
Nonetheless, he seems like he is not putting much effort into his dribbling skills. Compared to Messi, Ronaldo often dribbles on the side of the field because he started his position as a winger in Manchester United. Also his posture is higher than messi and he moves his arms back and forward widely when dribbling. Moreover, he uses a variety of different skills to go past players and those skills look very interesting and eye-catching. Due to these reasons, we can see that they have developed their own dribbling styles respectively.

Next, physical attribute also plays a pivotal role in playing football and it may affect one’s playing style and being utilized in a football strategy. Both players have very different physical attribute along the height and body balances. Messi is very well known for his short-height and people might think this could affect his playing ability. He, however, has a very good body balance due to his low center of gravity so he can change his dribbling direction quickly and go past players very easily. Ronaldo is a tall football player and shows many tricks with his long legs. He gets more chances to score when a ball is in the air. Also he has a muscular body and it makes him not to lose physical challenges from other players. Although they have very different physical attributes, it is no matter for them to show their great performance in the game.

Lastly, though football is played by 11 players for each team, there is always one key player who Has a huge impact on a game. Ronaldo and Messi have the ability to turn the tables in one's favor when losing or their team is in a difficult situation. Both are most important forwards for their each team and play almost every game. They both are good at free kick and always make creative ways to move the game. Their team’s performance is very different when Messi and Ronaldo are not on the game; it usually affects badly for their teams. They have been the top scorers for their team for 4 or 5 years and also assist to other teammates a lot as well. There is no doubt that they have been the best players for their team due to their contribution in the games.

To sum up, though Ronaldo and Messi have a major impact on their games, the two football players have different styles of playing football particularly. based on this I cannot say that one is better at football than one another. There, however, will still be argument about which one is the best football player because every football fan has different tastes and preferences towards football. Rather than argue about who is better, we should appreciate the fact that we are able to watch them playing live.

These days, there are many women politicians who lead the world. Among those people, there are two women who were both formerly Secretary of State for the U.S.; Hillary Clinton, and Condoleezza Rice. As politicians, there is a strong similarity in that they both have had successful careers. Although they have had successful career, it does not mean they had the same life. They are totally different in their background and their reputation, so in this essay I want to highlight the career that they have had, their background, and public opinion towards them.

Hillary Clinton and Condoleezza Rice have had the successful careers as a politician. They were both appointed as the United States secretary of State. As for Rice, she became the first African-American women secretary of the states serving under the George Bush.
