It can get rid of the dark spots on your model and makes them look more lit up. You have your model facing away from the sun and then reflect the sun rays so there are no dark spots. There are different types of reflectors and you use the different ones on the different incidences. 
2) The reflector helped with the portraits outside beaus it brightened up the model and made them show up more. Which led to the photo looking better than if we never ended up using it.
