CLIL ACTIVITY TO TACKLE DIVERSITY

I have discovered that lovely story to tackle diversity! I really believe in the power of literacy!

I suggest these activities for 3rd or 4th grade!

The book is about two male penguins: Roy and Silo at New York's Central Park Zoo. They see other couples of penguins hatching their eggs so they try with a rock in their nest. The zookeeper gives them a real egg that needs care and they take turns sitting on it until it hatches, so Tango is born. Somebody told me that the book is based on a real story.

Activities that can be carried out before or after reading the story:

Start by asking children: What do we know/learned about families? We can use a big mind map in the board or a digital mind map as popplet in the PDI, or we can just stick post-its or label a piece of chart paper asking about vocabulary: Who is in a family? What do family members giver or share with each other? What responsibilities do family members have?

I think it is important in that point to include all the different kind of families that can be in the classroom and name a wide variety of families: two moms or two dads, stepparents, adoptive parents, foster parents, single parents or LGBTQ members. One of the objective will be to teach children to accept differences amongst families by sharing.

2. What do we know/learned about penguins?

Children can label the different parts of the penguin: flipper, tail, chinstrap, webbed feet, bill...

Talking about animals and parts of the animals is a great topic too. So we can compare penguins with other birds, we can talk about the differences between them and mammals...

They can also try to predict or repeat the main characteristics of penguins that appear in the story:

penguins are in love/bowing-singing to each other/watching the other penguins hatch chicks/trying to hatch the rock/hugging at sunset...

We can also give each table a word bank of feelings words: sad, happy, lonely, jealous, frustrated, joyful, strong, proud, disappointed, safe.. then they can discuss in their groups which words would apply to the characters at each stage of the story.

I have chosen “Dali puzzle gamification” breakout and I have analyzed it from a CLIL perspective. That's the result!
Level: I think that these breakout could be done in 3rd cycle for example
5th or 6th grade.
Activity: The activity is simple, you need to answer some questions about
Dali’s wife and muse Gala and about his life. It is a quiz about the
Mecano song “Eugenio Salvador Dalí”, so children must listen to the
song to give the correct answer. When they do, they start to solve the
puzzle and at the end they can see Gala and Dali ’s picture.
Objective:
● Students will be able to comprehend and connect through
reading, listening, and viewing.
● Students will engage as listeners, viewers and readers to develop
an understanding of Dali’s life and work.
● Using the breakout, students will be able to draw connections
based on prior knowledge and comprehend the lyrics of a song.
● Students may draw connections between Dalí and the world
around them.
Competences from the English curriculum:
● Recognize the importance of Dali's personal story as a catalan
surrealist artist.
● Demonstrate awareness of the role that the song plays in
community identity.
● Use personal experience and knowledge to connect to questions
to make meaning.
● Recognize the structure and elements of the quiz; engage actively
as listeners, viewers, and readers to develop understanding of self,
and collective identity.
