Upon his arrival in Africa, Santiago met a young man whom he soon became "friends" with. The "friend" claimed that the bar owner was trying to steal Santiago's money and made him think he had helped him in a dangerous situation. By doing so, he gained Santiago's trust very quickly. While Santiago wasn't paying attention in a crowded market, his "new friend" stole all his money.

At first, Santiago distrusts Melchizedek, he thinks that he is just a random old man and feels annoyed by him. However, as the old king reveals his identity and converses with the boy, Santiago starts to trust him and rely on him.
