That Scratchy Chalkboard Ear Pain (Early 90's)

My parents told me that the chalkboard was the main thing that the teacher used in their classroom to teach, whether it be examples of math problems or definitions of words in language arts. They also pointed out how you had to write quick because once the board was erased it was gone unlike today where we could just go back a slide.

The Smooth Whiteboard (2000's)

My cousin who had went to school in the 2000's talked about the whiteboard and the markers. Though the same problem of "once it's gone, it's gone" was still around, the ear pain of the chalkboard was wiped away (no pun intended). This board at the front of the classroom was still the main method of teaching.

The Smoother Smartboard (2020's)

A younger family member who is beginning their high school journey said the smartboard is at the front of the classroom and is one of multiple methods of instruction. The past's problem is no longer present, if a student needs more time to write the teacher can go back a slide or the student can reference the notes after class in the class' website.

Students on Their Phone in Class

In addition to using computers everyday in class, students use their phones for homework, in class assignments, and in class activities. The new age school is embracing students having their own personal devices as it adds to the curriculum.

All 3 interviewees stated that paper and pencil were used, however the 2020's representative stated they rarely use this technology as it is only needed for testing or if there is a substitute in class. The 1990's and 2000's representatives stated that school would not have been school without the paper and pencil since this was their only way of doing assignments, with the exception of class activities.

The 1990's (at least for the schools my parents went to) did not have computers in their classrooms as the classic paper-pencil was much more efficient. The 2000's saw designated times to use the computers in order to learn how to work with different websites. The computer to the 2020's has become the paper and pencil of before as school would have to do a 180 to not use computers in each class.
