Reverend Parris is a very greedy person and we can see that without the writer having to tell us because we can see throughout the end of act 1 that he constantly is arguing about how little income he gets and how much better his life was before.

"A minister is the lord's man in the parish, a minister is not to be so lightly crossed and contradicted."(page 1112) Parris and Proctor are arguing about land. This shows that Reverend Parris thinks he should be treated with more respect as a minister.

In the beginning of act 1 the narrarator says,"At the time of these events Parris was in his middle forties. In history he cut a villainous path, and there is very little good to be said for him. He believed he was being persecuted wherever he went, despite his best efforts to win people and God to his side. " We can see here that the narrarator is adding background on Reverend Parris' background in the beginning of the play. We see here that he had a bad past and was not liked by many people even though he wanted to be on peoples good side and was a man of God.
