In 2016, congress passed a bill to defund Planned Parenthood, a center for reproductive health and services for women. They proposed this bill because this nationwide clinic performs the controversial procedure of abortion. However, after the bill was passed, it was shortly vetoed thereafter by President Barack Obama. Nonetheless, the controversy was brought to public light and has been there ever since.

A statement given by Women's Health listed the following statistics to stress the importance of Planned Parenthood:
“One in five American women have used the group's services, and three out of four of its patients are considered to have low incomes. In 2011 it carried out tests and treatment for more than four million individuals with sexually transmitted diseases. It supplied 750,000 exams to prevent breast cancer, the most common cancer among U.S. women. And it performed 770,000 Pap tests to prevent cervical cancer, which was a leading cause of death among women before this screen became widely available.”

An article written by the Washington Post argued the following concept in reaction to the large amount of opposition to abortion performed by Planned Parenthood:
“If you are among those who view abortion tantamount to murder, I respect your belief. But consider: Defunding Planned Parenthood would inevitably result in more unplanned pregnancies and therefore more abortions, not fewer. In fact, if you really want to reduce the number of abortions, you should be lobbying to increase funding for Planned Parenthood and other organizations that provide birth control.”

This information was compiled by the National Post, which depicts the number of abortions provided by independent Abortion Clinics compared to the number of abortions provided by Planned Parenthood. The chart may seem confusing because Planned Parenthood is the smaller piece, but keep in mind that the larger piece isn't one string of abortion clinics acting as one entity, so to speak. These several Abortion Clinics are separate from each other, which is why Planned Parenthood is the single largest provider of abortions in the United States.

An interview with House Speaker Paul Ryan concluded the best interest of the reasoning behind Congress's decision to pass the bill to defund Planned Parenthood. Part of their reasoning is that money used to fund this clinic could go towards other health centers/services.
"We don't want to commit taxpayer funding for abortion, and Planned Parenthood is the largest abortion provider," House Speaker Paul Ryan said during a CNN town hall this month. He said Republicans would rather shift those dollars -- and redirect Planned Parenthood's patients using those dollars -- to federal community health centers.

A cumulative survey taken by Gallup paints the stagnant divide between opinions of abortion in the United States from 2002 to 2018. Because of this stark difference in opinion, many opposers of Planned Parenthood say that it would not be fair to make them pay taxes that goes towards something they do not believe in.
