It has specific projects that focus on the democratic participation of the Roma youth, care and the support for the elderly Roma, and Roma women’s health literacy,

Moreover, the association contributes to the work of the National and Regional Advisory Boards on Romani Affairs and takes part in the various working groups in the ministries and public bodies.

Outreach: The work of Finnish Roma Association covers all levels from grassroots to local, regional, and national. There are an estimated 10,000 Roma living in Finland, scattered all around the country with long distances, and the association serves them basically by phone and various digital platforms, but all camps and trainings are available nationwide. The majority of Roma population however lives in Southern Finland, notably in the capital city Helsinki and in the surrounding metropolitan area, and most of the association’s face-to-face activities take place there.

As to international level, the association has recently joined European networks such as European Roma Rights Center (ERRC) and Permanent Anti-racism CSOs Forum. In 2022, it started its first international projects together with European Roma CSOs, funded from the Erasmus+ Programme.

As the Roma population in Finland is small, the number of Roma youth (18-29 years old) is approximately 1400. The most important form of youth work organised by the association is youth camps, which are participated by dozens of young Roma every year. Through social media, the association reaches up to half of Finland's Roma youth.

Volunteering activities: The Finnish Roma Association sends every year Roma youth to European events and trainings through its European partners, including such activities as Dikh he na bister and So keres, Europa? The costs are usually covered by the hosting organisations.

Similarly in Finland, the association sends Roma youth to trainings, such as Ambassador of Peace training organised by Finnish peace organisations. The costs are covered by the Finnish Roma Association.

The Finnish Roma Association hosts the Finnish Roma Youth Network which is an unregistered league of active Roma youth who are interested in promoting Roma rights on a voluntary basis.

Mobility programs: Mobility programs are implemented through Erasmus+ Programme, from which the association applies funding annually. It is interested in all kinds of activities: youth exchanges, mobility of youth workers, youth participation activities, small-scale partnerships and cooperation partnerships. So far it has experience on youth participation activities and small-scale partnerships.

Currently, the association has an ongoing small-scale-partnership with the Serbian Roma CSO. Along with the project, 10 Finnish Roma youth travelled to Serbia and 10 Serbian Roma youth to Finland. The participants have prepared a digital photo exhibition that reflects their Roma identity and will be published in the end of the year.

Non-formal education: The Finnish Roma Association provides continuously training for the Roma people, especially for the Roma youth, as well as for Roma women in their active ages. The skills and capacities of Roma youth for social participation have been strengthened by training on human rights, equality, intersectionality, identity, Roma policy, anti-discrimination, and others.

Furthermore, an internship program has been established at the Association to improve the working life readiness and further employment opportunities of the Roma youth. The training for Roma women includes health literacy and digital skills.

Furthermore, the association provides training for the professionals who work with the Roma people, such as decision makers, civil servants, service providers, teachers, and students. The topics include cultural awareness, culturally sensitive approach, equality, service-enhancing special practices, and good practices.

The non-formal education has been funded by the Finnish ministries and Erasmus+ Programme.

Advocacy: The guiding principle of the Finnish Roma Association has been that Roma people and Roma organisations must be consulted with regard to any policies on Roma.

The policy advocacy has been the major area of the Finnish Roma association since its establishment. In practice, the association has raised awareness on Roma issues in keen collaboration with public bodies, notably ministries and local governments, non-discrimination ombudsman and the parliamentary ombudsman, as well as through media. The association provides many kinds of grassroot-level support for Roma people in applying benefits, and making complaints in discrimination cases, for example.

The Finnish Roma Association is the national coordinator in Finland for the Roma Civil Monitor (RCM) 2021-2025 initiative, implemented by a consortium led by the Democracy Institute of the Central European University (DI/CEU), under a service contract with the European Commission’s Directorate-General Justice and Consumers (DG Just). The country report (2022) is available at https://romacivilmonitoring.eu/countries/finland/

The association was also the Finnish national coordinator for the Roma Civil Monitor (RCM) 2017-2020 pilot project.

Funding: The Finnish Roma Association relies solely on project funding. The major funding comes from the Funding Centre for Social Welfare and Health Organisations (projects on elderly Roma, and Roma women’s health), among which 15 % of total budget can be used for administrative expenses.

In 2022, project funding is also received from the Erasmus+ Programme, as well as Finnish public sources, such as The Arts Promotion Centre Finland, the Finnish Ministry for Foreign Affairs, The Finnish Heritage Agency and the Finnish National Agency for Education.

Cooperation: The Finnish Roma Association is open for any new collaboration with Roma and non-Roma CSOs from the European countries and even beyond, basically in the fields of youth work and non-formal education. It is interested, but not limited, in topics such as antigypsyism, equity and inclusion, active citizenship, participatory and creative methods, culture and creativity, cultural heritage, Romani language, dialogue between young people and policy makers, minorities, sustainable development, digital transformation.

More specifically, the Finnish Roma Association is interested in such fundings as Erasmus+ KA220-YOUTH as a partner (not applicant yet) to learn how to manage large cooperation partnerships. The association has already successfully applied and implemented several small-scale partnership Erasmus+ Projects and is eager to learn more. In 2021, it participated the consortium aiming at winning CERV project, but unfortunately the application was not successful.

What projects would you like to find partners for at this Networking meeting?See below.
