         <description><![CDATA[<div>A <strong>powhiri</strong> or <strong>pohiri</strong> is a traditional Maori welcome.<br>When you come to study at Unitec, you’re welcomed into the <strong>whanau</strong> and community with a <strong>pōhiri </strong>at the marae.  The marae is your home away from home.  The marae reminds us we are part of a large family and community called Unitec.</div>]]></description>

         <title>The pohiri step by step guide</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>1.  There are <strong>two</strong> groups of people on the marae.  The <strong>tangata whenua </strong>and the <strong>manuhiri.</strong><br>2.  The tangata whenua are the people connected to the marae and the manuhiri are the visitors<br>3.  The manuhiri will wait at the entrance to the marae to be called onto the marae.  The call is a <strong>karanga. </strong> This is done by our host.<br>4.  We will take our shoes off to show our respect for the place before we enter the <strong>whare nui</strong> or <strong>meeting house.<br></strong>5.  The men sit in the front row and the women in the back.<br>6. There is a <strong>waiata</strong> or <strong>song </strong>to finish.<br>7.  Then we meet and greet with a <strong>hongi</strong> or a kiss on the cheek for the women. <br>8.  We leave a <strong>koha</strong> or gift for the tangata whenua.
