Have said that, I do not believe that even armed with the knowledge of environmental impacts that people will not use, use less, or think to conserve power when using AI. We are a society that likes knowledge at our fingertips and the faster something is available - the better. Therefore I think the public will only continue to want more information faster, no matter the cost. Hopefully, at the very least, we can convince the end users to scale back their consumption by using fewer and more specific prompts; to get what they want at less of a "cost".

The metals used in chips pose a significant problem as well. Metals that are used are not recycled well and create a considerable environmental impact as well.

I get resentful when responsibility is put on us the user, when the biggest impact is to be made by these corporations. I would certainly be more likely to use AI that focuses on minimizing their environmental impact! I hope that with the continued awareness of the environmental impact, these organizations will make strides towards being more environmentally friendly. AND if not . . . let's make some laws to ensure they do!

I read the MIT article and watched the DW video. That was eye opening for me. I had never considered any of this. The energy and water usage alone were staggering. The fact that even any non-contaminated waste water was harmful because it's warmer and changes the environment. I like to hear more about companies that focus on how we can change this. At some point the collective we need to change focus from dollar signs to a more responsible way of living. I guess knowing the problem is the first step.

I don't aprove the fact that big companies are taking advantage of countries such as Chile or any other country without any warning about the impact it will have on them just because there are no effective rules in place about environmental impact, therefore people are not aware of the situation.

Within my classroom I presently have a Classwork/Homework policy. I believe I will be adding an "ethical use" clause for search engines/AI. That if students do use these tools, they are tools only - and the work turned in is to be their own.
