Favourite Music

I can't say I have an absolute favourite song, as my music preferences has always been something that changes with my mood. That being said though I can give some recommendations for certain songs.

Something Comforting - Porter Robinson
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IGrhyOtikQ0
This song comes from singer/songwriter/producer Porter Robinson, and was written during a time of creative difficulty. The song is a reflection of a person's desire to find fulfillment and happiness in life, but not being able to understand how exactly to find this fulfillment and happiness, and the yearning for reassurance that everything will be alright.

Drifting Away - Audien
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V5-dMooLdPs
Audien has released some of my most listened-to songs over the past few years. His latest release, Drifting Away, is also a spectacular demonstration of his producing capabilities, being able to take a simple melody and put it in the spotlight without relying on over-the-top sounds.

Loneliness - Ginger Root
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hMCAF8tZ7ZE
Inspired by the City Pop genre originating from 80s - 90s Japan, Ginger Root created an EP, Nisemono, that tells the story of one songwriter, Ginger Root, that was bought on stage to replace the singer whom he wrote songs for after the singer decided to abandon her post. Loneliness is my favorite song in the entire EP, and I would go as far as say the best work done by Ginger Root.

And for some more recommendations:
Artists/Albums

NIKI
- Nicole
- wanna take this downtown? (EP)

The 1975
- A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships

San Holo
- bb u ok?

The Weeknd
- Dawn FM

Avicii
- True
- Stories

Madeon
- Adventure
- Good Faith

And of course the aforementioned artists earlier in the post.

Adichie talked about her experience with foreign reading material as a child, leading her to believe foreigners are crucial to the integrity of a story. I have a similar experience as a child, but instead of books, my single story comes from hollywood films. I was led to believe strong male protagonists are what makes a movie 'good'.

The song and music video mocks traditional masculinity through its lyrics and plot of the MV. At 1:35 of the video, the lyrics goes "I got skin in the game. I got a household name. When it comes to Friday, I always earn." while simultaneously showing the main character entering a casino and placing a large bet and getting ready to gamble. The lyrics clearly refers to the traditional masculine stereotype of men being the "breadwinner" of a household, and "household name" in this instance refers to "the man" being the most reliable person in the household, as if he is famous in the household. The end of the video (around 3:58) shows "the man" being kicked out of the casino after betting all of his valuables and subsequently losing it all.

Post 9: Orientalism and Othering

Orientalism refers to relating a particular race, or nationality to acts of terrorism in an attempt towards identifying them as "the enemy".
Othering is the act of labeling a group as having strayed away from "social norms" to antagonize them.
The attatched screenshot is taken from the film Iron Man, and depicts the main character, Tony Stark having been kidnapped by what appears to be adversaries that have traits normally seen in middle-eastern extremist-religious terrorist organizations. The depiction of the adversaries in the film show them using what seems to be stolen weaponry and extremely destructive methods to complete their objective, they are depicted to have a lack of empathy for characters in the film that are considered "westerners". This antagonizes the entire middle-eastern population by giving them a single representation of violence, and antagonizes them for western audiences, who see them as the "enemy".
