Despite countless protests for greater independence throughout Tibet's history, Tibet will most likely never be free from China due to 3 main reasons.
1. Tibet has the Himalayas which serve as a protective natural border between China and India.
2. Tibet has an estimated $130 billion worth of mineral reserves that China has already begun to mine. These resources include iron, gold, lead, lithium, mercury, and uranium.
3. Many of China's rivers originate in Tibet or from the Tibetan Plateau. By controlling Tibet, China can also exploit these rivers by creating hydroelectric dams.

Traditionally, the Dalai Lama would also assume full political power over Tibet, but the Chinese government took over in 1959 and forced the Dalai Lama into exile. One of The 14th Dalai Lama's most notable achievements was leading a nonviolent campaign to end China's domination over Tibet. Although unsuccessful, his efforts earned him a Nobel Peace Prize in 1989.
