In our first workshop we were asked to bring in references that reflect our theme. we were then asked to further describe and break down our references connection to the theme and then to find common ground in which they all meet. Once we completed the task we then needed to find a way in which to display our references that reflect how we would like our reader to depict information.

We chose to display our references as a pin point swirling out, referencing how all ideas are connected and how hey expand and branch off into various ideas and subcategories.

Father Thames - The great stink

I really enjoy this illustration of Father Thames offering his children to the mother of parliaments. This illustration depicts 'The great stink', an event that occurred in London in 1858, lasting one year. Where the Thames become so full of human excrement that filled the air of London and birthed three great diseases; dysentery, typhoid and cholera. These three diseases are said to be the children of Father Thames.

Originally Father Thames was depicted in a Roman style sculpture, but after 'The Great Stink' Father Thames was illustrated as an unclean old man carrying a bucket with a dead cat. I find it interesting how we alter deities form, reflecting any changes to what it represents.

Many creation myths around the world tell us of great floods or rain that has fallen to fertilise the earth, or even in scientific terms of humans' journey of evolution, from sea to land.

Water was and still is predominant in creation myths and their connected rituals, underlining the close relationship of mythological traditions with their immediate environment. While many of us today may not observe the same direct, spiritual connection with water, depending on our industrial water supply, we still worship water when we–as the great comic George Carlin used to say–satisfy the great American fetish of carrying with us our own water bottles wherever we go.

“The River Thames was used for ritual purposes, healing, shamanic purification rites and later for Christian baptisms as well as for hydromancy – the practice of divination through water. Some adepts would thrown pebbles into the water and count the number of circles that spread through the ripples. Some would throw loaves of bread for the water goddess or use bread in the water for scrying. Others would interpret the significance of the colours of the water of the river.”

“No one is quite sure when Old Father Thames was first evoked, but there is plenty to suggest that those living by the river have been paying their dues for hundreds if not thousands of years. An Iron Age shield was dredged from the depths at Battersea in 1875 and ancient votive offerings are still constantly uncovered along the river, picked from the strandline by mudlarks and archaeologists.

Perhaps its personification as a god, or the creation of myths around it, was a way of understanding the river and its changes; the act of worship an attempt to control or impose order on water that has the power to shape and fertilise land, to give life and to take it away. The divine river helped to make sense of the mystery, the beauty and the destruction of the natural world.

Some suggest that Old Father Thames has links to other gods. Peter Ackroyd says Father Thames 'bears a striking resemblance to the tutelary gods of the Niles and Tiber'. The Roman river god Tiberinus certainly shares key characteristics with him: the beard, the locks, the aversion to clothes. Ackroyd suggestions that Old Father Thames's hipsterish follicles could represent the braiding channels of the river's flow. But whatever his past, Old Father Thames has come to be a personification of the river in both good times and bad. He has been seen as a revered guardian while also caricatured as a rude and filthy tramp, during the pollution of the 19th century, surrounded by dead fish and rotting livestock, offering up his children Diphtheria, Choler and Scrofula to those who lived and worked on his waters.”
