1-2 key messages to share: I am planning on sharing Box 2 Promising Practices in EC that Support Parent Engagement with my parent coordinator and instructional leader. They work together to design parent engagement opportunities. I'm looking forward to reviewing this Box with my team and reflecting on what we have in place and what we are missing. -Amanda

One thing that stood out when reading the Supporting Parent Engagement article: ".."the strongest predictor of school involvement was the number of other parents in their child's class whom the parents knew well enough to converse with (Dunrand, 2011). This statement about the importance of social networks for parents causes me to stop and ask; how are we as an organization helping the families to connect? -Amanda

I can't say this is a surprise, but it is something that we are coming across more often.... "some of these immigrants may be undocumented and therefore wary of involvement with public agencies and programs," pg 4. This is becoming more apparent for my team as we collect proof of income from families. This year we have had several with their paystubs in another name. This could open the door to conversations.

Reading "The Black Family" article, I connected with the statement "it is critical to approach families without judgement--and without extensive forms for them to complete ..." because this so closely connects to our project of trying to create a strengths-based and more family-friendly intake process.

Teachers vs parent liaisons

"The Black Family" mentioned that teachers will often "outsource" family situations to parent liaisons. I have noticed this happens frequently with our black families, and then they are referred to a black parent liaison. As the article states, that it is important that teachers accept their role as the "primary mediator of family engagement" and find ways to use the parent liaisons. In the Expansion Grant program, we are still looking to find the right balance between the role of the teacher and the parent liaison in the communications and how that relationship works.
-Karin
