The novel so far feels like a window because I have been fortunate enough to grow up with an education and never had to wonder when my next meal would be or come from. The Walls family moves around but I've never moved. I'm really thankful for having a better life growing up compared to Jeanette's. Having parents that cared about my well being and safety.

The education and health of the family as a whole is concerning. The kids aren't properly enrolled into school because the parents think that they only need survival skills in the world. They won't be able to afford college or earn any scholarships into future schools that can help with their path in life to help support them. Health plays another part that concerns me very much. How dos Rex not prefer for Jeanette to be taken care of by professionals and hates authority. I question if they believe in diseases or medication.

The glass castle is supposed to be their forever home. "...and so we could build the glass castle". Rex speaks about the glass castle as if it's their dream home that the family is searching for but I find it wild how he brings their hopes up when they can barely afford to survive without running off for being in one place for too long. How would he know that they have finally found the glass castle if they can barely last for a certain time in one place and then move.

2 main issues throughout the book are social class and poverty. Rex and Rosemary don't have the right mindset to try and save any of their money for the kids but go and spend any of their money on unnecessary things. The kids are left to starve and Jeanette resorts to digging through the school garbage to search for any leftover scraps and shoving them in her backpack but she doesn't want her classmates to find out that she is planning on taking some for herself and for the rest of her siblings. Once she starts to smell the bologna, she gets rid of it so no one finds out she had taken it out of the trash.

Jeanette says that she finds herself surviving off of just one meal at school. "Sometimes that lunch was all I had to eat all day, but I could get by just fine on one meal (Walls, pg. 110)". It's really infuriating that the parents won't use their money wisely even when considering that their kids don't have a guaranteed meal every single day, but just a single meal from school that will barely fill their appetites.

1. We read that Jeanette's family is a lower class because they don't have a proper education, can't make it through a week without having any proper meals to last them or any bedding. Many of us readers have that privilege. It gives us insight on the cruel living situation the family is in. The kids don't really realize their financial situation because the dad makes them believe that they are going to find the glass castle soon and that everyone is going to get everything that they want. They believe that everything is going to work out for them in the end and that parents don't do anything that can help them get closer to the glass castle by saving money or keeping jobs.

Their improper use of money is questioned by Jeanette when she asks Rosemary what happened to the money that she cashed out. "I've got a houseful of kids and a husband who soaks up booze like a sponge (Walls, pg.197)." It's a if she's shift all the blame to the kids when Rex can find himself a job to help support while the kids can't. They can't fend for themselves. Jeanette then thinks about it and starts to thinks that Rosemary is using that money just for herself. At that point it wouldn't be surprising since she only thought to buy herself chocolate and nothing for the kids.
