In the novel Lord of the flies , the boys create rules to keep them from becoming savages. The rules are use the conch in assembly meetings, Wait for your turn to talk, and interrupting of person holding the conch is not allowed. Also the boys are supposed to get water from the stream and store it in coconut shells under leaves."We decide things. But they don't get done. We were going to have water brought from the stream and left in those coconut shells under fresh leaves. So it was, for a few days. Now there's no water. The shells are dry"(Golding 79). People drink from the river Another rule is keep the fire signal on the mountain going at all times. The final rule is the rocks are used as bathroom, using the bathroom anywhere else is not allowed."'There's another thing. We chose those rocks right along beyond the bathing pool as a lavatory. That was sensible too. The tide cleans the place up. You littluns know about that.'"(Golding 80)

Throughout the book The Lord Of The Flies, the kids both agree and disagree with the rules set in place many time. Most of the kids mainly disagree with the rules set in place, such as Jack and most of the choir kids. For example, on page 33, Piggy was trying to talk while he had the conch in his hand, but Jack said ¨The conch doesn't count on top of the mountain, so you shut up." This is Jack blantinaly disobeying the rules that where just set in place so that their whole ¨society" wouldn't be unorganized and messy. The kids need a ¨government¨ to be able to function and actually have a shot of surviving on the island for as long as possible and to try and be saved.

"You let me speak!"
"The conch doesn't count on top of the mountain," said Jack, "so you shut up."
"I got the conch in my hand." (Golding 32).

The first rule in the novel was that whoever had the conch could be the only person to talk until the conch was passed to them. Other rules that were made were that a few people would have to tend to the fire on the mountain. This were often ignored because when they would go out and try to find the beastie they would let the fire go out. Also they Jack would always interrupt piggy when he would have the conch telling him to "shut up" and say Conch, conch, conch over and over again. However it would allow the older kids to talk while the younger ones were quiet

Throughout the novel Lord Of The Flies, the boys view rules as more and more pointless. In the beginning the boys listen to each other and follow others beliefs on how to survive. Although as the novel goes on the boys continue to seek more freedom and less ruling from others and believe they can do as they please. Ralph believes they should choose someone to watch the fire at all times in case a ship passes. Ralph says "The best thing we can do is get ourselves rescued."(Golding 53) This sounds like a good idea but jack and the choir just want to hunt. So jack does as he pleases and lets the fire go out soon after a ship passes but there is no fire to signal for help.

In the book The Lord of Flies, there are boys that have made rules and have order on an island. In the beginning they all listen to the rules and still have order, but they have started to drift from the rules and order. Most of the boys listen to the rules and orders while they are in the meetings, but as soon as the meetings are over they go do their own thing. Some examples of the rules are the conch and the signal fire. Almost all of the boys listen to the conch rule. They all usually stay quiet when the person holding the conch is talking, in the book Ralph creates the rule by saying, '"That's what this shell's called. I'll give the conch to the next person to speak. He can hold it when he's speaking.'...'And he won't be interrupted,"'(Golding). Keeping the signal fire going is the hunters job, and most of the time it is not going when they need it, here is an example, “Ralph ran stumbling along the rocks, saved himself on the edge of the pink cliff, and screamed at the ship...‘They let the bloody fire go out.’” (Golding).

The boys viewed and went over the rules at their very first meeting and go over them every once in awhile when needed in the novel LOTF. The rules are ignored a-lot when piggy has the conch, nobody really cares that he has it and they just talk over him. For example this happens very early on in the novel,"'What are we? Humans? Or animals? Or savages? What's grownups going to think?
Going off--hunting pigs--letting fires out--and now!' A shadow fronted him tempestuously. 'You shut up, you fat slug!' There was a moment's struggle and the glimmering conch jigged up and down. Ralph leapt to his feet. ' Jack! Jack! You haven't got the conch! Let him speak.' Jack's face swam near him." (Golding 25). In this little passage piggy is talked over even though he had the conch.

All the rules were followed by the kids except Jack and the choir. Jack and the choir were supposed to keep the fire going on the top of the mountain so that somebody could maybe find them. Instead of following that rule, they decided that they'd want to go try and hunt for food. In the text when Jack and the choir were walking, it says, "I was talking about smoke! Don't you want to be rescued? All you can talk about is pig, pig, pig! But we want meat!" (Golding 41) This quote shows that all the kids on the island were following the rules for the most part except for Jack and the choir.

In this novel the boys create rules so they can be safe and organized. At the beginning of the novel Piggy found a conch shell, then jack blew it. Since Jack blew the shell he was then nominated leader. Later on Piggy had the idea to organize a meeting to meet everyone on the island and to get some rules set. They used the conch as whoever holds it is able to speak. The longer they are on the island the less and less the boys care about the rules they had set. Piggy would still always try to use the conch to speak although no matter if he was holding it or not he would be told to shut up. "i got the conch" - "you let me speak"
"the conch doesn't count onto of the mountain" - "so you shut up" "i got the conch in my hand" (Golding 32) This shows how they boys had created rules but are now not listening to them as they said they would.

(Golding 41) This shows how the rule was disobeyed by Jack and his choir because when Ralph saw that the fire was out he got really upset with them and asked them did they really want to get rescued because that was their way of telling someone they needed help and wanted to get off that island. The rules are most ordered when things get crazy and out of control. "And another thing. We can't have everybody talking at once. We'll have to have 'Hands up' like at school." He held the conch before his face and glanced round the mouth. "Then I'll give him the conch." "Conch?" "That's what this shell's called. I'll give the conch to the next person to speak.
