It's a kind of light bulb which operates by refraction of sunlight. He used a plastic bottle filled with water and stuck it through a roof. Sunlight is refracted by the water in the bottle and spreads around the room. Of course, it uses no electricity or power other than natural light.
Its latest revision has a simple circuit with a solar panel, which has made it possible for the lamp to work during the night.

I've never heard of Appropriate Technology before. Living in Korea, I've been able to take advantage of every advanced technology which makes my daily life more convenient and comfortable without any social, cultural, or political restrictions.

So when I first watched the video, I got shocked. I could face up to the harsh circumstances that the poor in developing countries have to live through. I couldn't even imagine how miserable it might be to be alienated from those technical benefits which I'm taking for granted.

Many organizations have been cooperating with each other to help the technology prevail. It is said that Moser lamp is now lighting up, at no cost, many homes in many countries, including Philippines, India, Bangladesh, Tanzania, Argentina and Fiji. The movement became known as the Liter of Light. Thanks to the simple but fundamental invention, many helpless people are finding a way out of inevitable alienation.

In addition, I learned that there are some things that we shouldn't neglect when we help someone in need. Those are his local, cultural, and economic conditions. If they're not regarded, every favor we do for him might go to waste.
