In 1819, Missouri applied for admission as a slave state, which would've upset the balance of free and slave states in the Senate.

It was both because it maintained a balance of the free enslaved states.

The Compromise of 1850

In order to settle disputes between the north and the south America let California be a free state and split the rest into Utah and new Mexico. They gave them a government with a system of popular sovereignty. I felt like this didn't make the issue better but instead heated up the tension. I feel like this benefitted the confederation more because they got 2 different states and even tho they are smaller then California they might still count as 2 separate votes.

Manifest Destiny and James Polk

The Manifest Destiny of the fate of the United States was to expand from "Sea to Shining Sea."

The region that got benefitted from this is America because they thought god told them to take over.

I feel like it led up to the civil war by The Westward Movement.

Popular sovereignty

a system based on letting the people decide by majority rules. I feel like this is efficient ideally but in reality this wouldn't work because the more people the less likely they are to agree to anything and could cause revolution. I feel like this benefitted neither side or the it benefitted the side with more people in that state.

Mexican War

The Mexican-American (1846-48) marked the first U.S armed conflict chiefly fought on foreign soil.

The region that benefitted is the USA because the USA won against the Mexicans , However the North and South got further Divided.

It led up to the civil war by Divisions over slavery in the territory gained in the Mexican-American War were resolved during the Compromise of 1850.

The Kansas-Nebraska Act

This act split the Nebraska territory into two smaller cities and allowed popular sovereignty which ignited tension between the north and south. I feel like this was another attempt of trying to calm both sides down but accomplished the opposite. I feel like this didn't benefit or help neither side.

Dred Scott Decision

The Dred Scott v Sandford decision in 1857 was a U.S. Supreme court case that ruled African Americans, regardless of whether they were free or enslaved they had no rights to sue in court.

It benefitted the U.S because it abolished slavery and granted citizenship to all persons born or naturalized in the U.S

It led up to the civil war because It invalidated the Missouri Compromise in 1820, which restricted slavery in certain U.S territories.

John Brown's Raid

The John Brown Raid was an attempt to start a slave rebellion to save the enslaved people, but it went wrong when Colonel Robert E. Lee quickly suppressed the raid. Brown was captured and executed by hanging on December 2, 1859.

It benefitted the North and South because it made nations come closer.

It led up to the Civil War because John Brown's Death pushed the nation Closer to War while Intensifying Tensions.

Election of Abraham Lincoln

Abraham Lincoln was elected president in 1860. This was the last straw for southerner because this caused southern states to succeed from the U.S and form a new country called the Confederate States of America. I feel like this was when the war officially started and preparations began. This benefitted the union because it gave them a good leader.

Attack on Fort Sumter

While Abraham was sending supplies to fort sumter America fired on their cannons on fort Sumter on April 12 1861. This attack marked the start of the civil war. This benefitted the Confederate army because the sneak attack was needed since they lack numbers. I feel like this was the point of no return for both sides.
