The prenatal stage begins with either sperm-induced ovum conception and concludes with birth. Physical growth is acceptable when there are sufficient amounts of nutrient-rich food available, opportunities for physical activity, and accessibility to healthcare. The fetus can swallow and kick the mother at the end of three months. At this time, male and female characteristics can be identified due to the formation of the external genitalia. The fetus reaches its entire development stage at 40 weeks, having reached the point at which it can moves up and down, open its eyes, and hear the mother singing and speaking.

The toddler spans the ages or one to three years of age. The toddlers body grows and its proportions alter, resulting in physical changes. Three years of age result in about 20 teeth. Toddlers can walk, run, leap, and climb on their own. When toddlers learn to speak and understand language, their talents advance quickly. For a toddler, the Erickson stage is autonomy versus shame/doubt. When toddlers are encouraged to explore their surroundings and acquire autonomous abilities, they will grow to feel confident in their capacity to take care of themselves. Overprotective parents might cause their toddler to develop self-doubt and humiliation, which can lead to overall incompetence.

Three to six years old is the preschooler stage. Compared to toddlers, preschoolers grow taller and slimmer. They become more adept at taking care of themselves and can dress by themselves. They can pick up abilities like jump rope and skating and communicate coherent phrases. Despite having limited attention spans, they can speak the letters of the alphabet and count. For preschoolers, the Erickson stage is initiative versus guilt. Children in preschool gain independence to learn. Preschoolers may experience remorse and be reluctant to take on new challenges if their parents are overly harsh and reprimand them.

The age range of school-age children is six to twelve years old. The body keeps growing physically, and puberty starts to occur. At this period of development, permanent teeth are also erupting. At this point of age, their motor and sensory skills improve and they start to take greater responsibility for their work. They advanced in their logical reasoning and capacity to view things from various angles. They now have longer attention spans and feel more pride in their achievements. At this age, children begins to reason, solve problems, and learn how to abide by norms. For school-age youngsters, the Erickson stage is inferiority versus industry. Peers have a big influence on them, and if their family and friends don't accept them, they start to doubt their own value.

The adolescent phase lasts from 12 to 20 years of age. They are significant to physical changes as the reproductive system occurs. Adolescents need enough sleep and relaxation because they can get easily tired from their activities. Adolescents are capable of using thinking skills and absorbing vast amounts of information. They began formulating their life philosophy and future professional identities. Stress is very common in these adolescents. The Erickson stage of adolescence is identity versus role confusion. They are fascinated by the enormous changes in their bodies, but are also unsure of who they are as they go from childhood to adulthood.

The 20s and 30s are considered young adulthood. Physical functioning peaks around age 30, after which it begins to decline with further aging. Similar to visual and auditory senses, muscular strength peaks in the 20s and 30s and starts to drop after mid 30s. The Erickson stage for young adulthood is intimacy versus isolation. Young adults may have several responsibilities that are spaces out across time, such as developing a close relationship, bearing or raising children, pursuing further education, and starting a career. These young adults might be afraid to commit, which could lead to their isolation and loneliness.

The years between 40 and 65 are referred to as middle adulthood. The physical capabilities keep deteriorating. Physical strength and endurance decline with muscle mass. Middle-aged people could start to worry about their physical well-being. In this stage, chronic illness can start at any point. Muscle and joint reflexes react more slowly. Balance and coordination are compromised, and there is a delayed reaction to stress on the visual, auditory and gustatory systems. The Erickson stage for middle adult hood is generativity versus stagnation. This stage is characterized by a desire to contribute something worthwhile and a period of self-evaluation and goal accomplishment assessment. There will be a lot of adjustments to make as health problems arise and retirement concerns surface. People have what is known as a "midlife crisis" during this time. Individuals may become more self-absorbed and fixated oh health issues if they are unable to see their value of their contributions to the world.

65 years to death is considered the later adulthood stage. Physical deterioration persists, resulting in atrophied reproductive systems, loss of bone and muscle. The immune system and heart deteriorate. Physical reactions become slower and certain motor abilities deteriorate when one's tolerance for pain declines. While mainly elderly people get dementia, particularly around the age of 80, others maintain and even improve their capacity for creativity, and problem-solving. The Erickson stage for later adulthood is integrity versus despair.
