This was all part of a cult called Heaven's Gate.
In 1993, Applewhite's group first started out as Total 'Overcomer's Anonymous' . The group maintained itself financiall by building websites for businesses using the name' Higher Authority'. The group later evolved to their most famous name "Heaven's Gate"
In these padlets, I will be exploring the life of the leader of Heaven's gate. His leadership style and how it influenced groupthink, which led to mass suicide. Amazingly, the cult still exists today and even has a website!! On this site ,you can find information about Heaven's Gate through the books they sell, and free tidbits of information about them through excerpts from their books.  Together, they convinced a mass of followers that the return of "Haley-Bop"( A comet that was believed to have a spaceship trailing it.) Would be their ticket to heaven once they leave their physical bodies. Unfortunately this would have to happen by what society considers suicide. Which fed on his follower's religious beliefs here in the U.S . His diminished view of life on earth was accepted by his followers. They gave up many of their worldly possessions. What is amazing is all of these people were what one would consider 'sane' people. To convince a mass of people, who were neither sick or suffering, to commit a mass suicide is amazing. He used informational influence to brainwash his followers. As he fed information and helped form opinions and ways of living. The longer the people lived and worked together, everyone's thoughts and opinions were pretty much in sync.
