I think it’s a great way to make students practice using their 5 senses.

Challenge:

The challenge for me would be how to make it engaging for the kids who are disinterested in the outdoors.

Connect:

I did not conduct the day trip but was involved in the safety aspect and choice of place. I see more potential after the sharing especially the way the students will be involved in journaling where they will actually be away from their digital devices and awaken their senses.

Extend : Story telling, tuning in are not new ideas but good reminders for enabling the students some buy in. You don't have to Picasso and I see the link / connection for Art and editing. What I see and what my friend sees and the discussion will be very engaging.

Challenge : I wonder how and I wonder why, yesterday you told me about the blue blue sky ....

I wonder if the students can be brought back to using their senses for observation in an outdoor setting, whether they will have the patience for nature journaling for example. Some I worry may get frustrated by not being able to draw or express their observations in words. I suspect that many of them have not been able or have noy taken the time or given the opportunity to see the blue blue sky... but instead see their small small screen..

Connect - Last year, it was our first time attempting natural journaling and i felt that at the very crux of what we did on Tuesday compared to last year's learning journey, we did have one common thing that we did and that was we really explored the park and its surrounding and we encouraged the kids to ask as many questions regarding the florals and faunas as well as the neighbourhood as much as possible.

Extend - Definitely the part where we got the kids to sit down and engage their 5 senses. I believe that was a good start to any of the OE lessons and I'm very keen to use this as a start for all my OE lessons.

Challenge - I don't think there is anything confusing. Rather i felt that the challenge for some, not all the kids will also be the reason to connect or relate to the natural or surrounding that they are in and make it make sense for them.

Connect

I had conducted a similarly many years ago. It reminded me nature journaling on top of looking at things flora and fauna from a micro view, it can also be looked from a wide angle, like the shape of the canopy the various heights of different trees, and the general landscape when zoomed out.

Extend

Will definitely try out the tuning in activity and cues before the start of the nature journaling. Giving them sufficient time to connect to the surroundings.

Challenge

Pupils are keen to head out for nature journaling , challenge will be balance their excitement while being focus and attention to details during the activity.

My style is different and am quite comfortable with motivating students to connect to nature.

Extend

Will probably go further by getting students to identify plants or insects using apps.
