         <title>The Problem</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>The problem I have recognised is poverty and I chose to recognise this problem because it is a worldwide issue that should be known to others and to make others aware of this issue. More than 10% of the world is in poverty, not because they choose to be poor, but because they were born into poor families. In other cases, they are born in HIPCs which stands for "heavily indebted poor countries". These people cannot move out of their country because they don't have enough money, or do not have the funds in their country. Some heavily indebted poor countries include, Afghanistan, Chad, Ethiopia, Haiti, Sudan, Uganda, and Zambia. Most of the people in these countries (plus multiple other countries/cities) cannot afford to spend money on items that they do not essentially need. The cost of any instrument can range from $100.00 to 16 million dollars and many people cannot afford to get instruments in poor countries. &nbsp;<br><br>This problem needs to be solved because music is also a part of education and is important for people who enjoy music and like to play music. For people who would like to learn music in those poor countries, they don't have another way that they can learn what they love to do, or would like to do. Poverty is also likely to do with your physical, mental, and psychological health and music is proven to relieve issues such as depression and anxiety disorders.&nbsp;Of course people can treat their anxiety and other disorders by medication, and treatment, but playing a musical instrument should also be fun and entertaining for everyone and everyone deserves a chance to play a musical instrument at least once in their life. <br><br></div>]]></description>

         <title>Violin</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>Skills/Techniques<br></strong>Since the person who made this violin is very likely to be a professional violin maker, he/she probably has learned the skills to be able to make such a complicated instrument. A factory made violin can be made in a few days, while a violin made by hand can take as long as 3 months, to half a year. This is something I read and realized that making something similar to a violin at SSIS is not possible to make in such a limited amount of time. A technique I could apply in my design and repurposed instrument could be how the violin's strings are attached to the tailpiece and the fine tuners, and goes all the way up to the pegs, which is how you would tune the instrument.<br><br><strong>Possible at SSIS<br></strong>I'm certain that something like this would be the opposite of possible, but we can take the possible out of this instrument such as the shaping of the violin and how the pegs connect the strings to the tailpiece/fine-tuners. I can include this things if I would be planning on making a stringed instrument. To make this violin, we would need all the tools to make it, and even if we tried to make it, it wouldn't look at all like the actual violin.<br><br><strong>Dislikes<br></strong>By looking at the instrument, I could not think of anything that I disliked about it other than how you would need all the other products such as the chin rest, finger-board, pegs, tailpiece, etc. This would also cost a lot of money, which isn't what we were looking for. All in all, the violin is very costly to make.&nbsp;<br><br><strong>Likes<br></strong>I really love the shape of the violin because its simple and looks very elegant. However it would be very complicated to make, we could create something similar to this in a design, if we would make a stringed instrument. I also really like how the strings are attached to the instrument. They are connected at the top by the pegs, and the string is connected again at the tailpiece with the smaller fine-tuners. <br><br><strong>Things to avoid<br></strong>I think something that I should avoid when making my own instrument is adding the expensive finger-board, chin rest, etc. This is extremely costly which is something we were avoiding from the beginning. Also, the varnish of this violin is nicely done, but it's also very costly, and since we are looking more into the repurposed materials, this wouldn't be something we should use in our instrument. <br><br><strong>Things to add:<br></strong>I feel like there isn't anything to add to the violin due to how complicated it is already. I think in my instrument, I might take some key concepts of the violin an add it into my instrument because making this would be too difficult, costly, and it wouldn't be made of repurposed materials. <br><br></div>]]></description>

         <title>Repurposed Harp/Lyre</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>Skills/Techniques<br></strong>To be able to make this harp/lyre, we would need woodwork skills. I see that the person that made this mostly made this instrument out of wood, which means that you would need to know how to cut wood, and measure it, and also how to place it. This person also connected the outer rim to the box in the middle with the metal hinges, which means that this person either had to screw it in, or just superglued it. Most likely, this person screwed it in. I think the most important skill to make this harp is the woodworking skill. <br><br><strong>Possible at SSIS<br></strong>This would definitely be possible at SSIS because the person that made this, obviously made it at SSIS. All we would need for this instrument is strings, wood, screws, and hinges. Then you would most likely saw the wood to make it into the shapes you would need and also measure it for this particular instrument.<br><br><strong>Dislikes<br></strong>I don't like how this instrument is so simple and straight forward, and I would really like for it to be more eye catching. I also don't really like how the hinges connect the corners of the instrument. I realize that this may be one of the only ways to connect them , but maybe doing it in a neater and subtler way may be better. <br><br><strong>Likes<br></strong>I like how this person did a good job measuring the distances of the screws to tie the strings, and how it was straight all the way to the top, where the string was joined. This was done in a neat way (other than the hinges) and it was measured very well. From this, I learned that I should measure things very well for my instrument, so it looks nicer, and will probably sound better when played. <br><br><strong>Things to avoid<br></strong>I think when I make my own instrument, I would avoid connecting the sides of the instrument with hinges, and making the instrument so simple. I feel like just looking at the instrument is a bit boring for me, because theres only one color and one main, straight-forward point. I get that this instrument has its own purpose, but I think avoiding these things will be better for when I make my own instrument.<br><br><strong>Things to add<br></strong>I think some things to add could include of adding more color, and finding another way if connecting the sides other than the hinges. I can take some ideas from this product and add it into my instrument, if I would be planning on making a harp/lyre. <strong><br></strong><br></div>]]></description>

         <title>Repurposed Tin can ukelele</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>Skills/Technique<br></strong>The skills and techniques you would need to make this instrument include of woodworks because of the finger board with the frets, and probably crafting skills as well because this person had to cut the hole in the tin can. To be able to make this instrument, you would also have to be able to put the frets on the finger board and put the screws in the tin can for the strings to be able to stay on the instrument. <br><br><strong>Possible at SSIS<br></strong>This would be possible at SSIS, because this instrument was probably also made at SSIS by a student that has done this unit in the past. All you would need for this instrument is wood, metal pieces for the frets, a tin can, screws, and some strings. SSIS has all of the items we need to create this instrument and it would not be so difficult to make this instrument in the school.<br><br><strong>Likes<br></strong>I really like the different materials used in this instrument. I also like how the reusable materials had a great part in this instrument. For example, the wooden harp above this instrument was technically made of just wood, but this ukulele was made with tin cans and strings, which is likely to be found in a landfill etc, somewhere in the city/country. I also like how there are frets, which would make it easier for children to learn this instrument.<br><strong><br>Dislikes<br></strong>I don't like how the frets are not evenly separated which could also become a problem when students are learning, and the space a little bit behind the fret isn't the right note. Also the screws weren't such a great idea when making this ukulele, because the tin can's surface is so thin that anything could penetrate it, such as what the screw is kind of doing. <br><strong><br>Things to avoid<br></strong>I think something to avoid is using screws for this tin can material-like instrument, because this instrument could easily break. <strong><br><br>This to add<br></strong>There is not much to add to this instrument because it has the frets, and the screws which allows the string to go from the top to the bottom of the instrument. It also has the hole in the middle of the instrument, so the sound can ring throughout a bigger space. I also realize that the fingerboard isnt precisely places at the middle, top of the tin can, which is something to change/add in the future.</div>]]></description>

         <title>The Solution</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>In my opinion, it is important for other people to know about this issue. The quicker more people know about this issue, the quicker we can solve it due to the support we get from others. The poor cannot afford instrument: that is clear. But just because it makes sense that people in poverty cannot afford such things, doesn't mean we cannot make it possible for people in poverty to play a musical instrument. <br><br>In a survey made in Australia in 2001 was said that only 35% of people could have a musical instrument, or could have access to one. But what about the other 65%? They also deserve to try out a musical instrument and play it once in their lives. There is a solution to this problem. Since on this world, we have so many leftover scraps of items that would go to waste, we could use the usable waste items, such as tin cans, cardboard boxes, metal scraps, plastic, plastic bags, jugs, pots, containers, etc and we could create our own version of instruments. This would be cheaper, and it would be reusing items, so it would be doing the world a favor! Also, if it would be possible, we could send designs of multiple ideas of products, and send them out to organizations to give the instruments out to children, and families who are in need, or would like to have the instrument so they could also enjoy the joy of playing </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Since this unit is about repurposed materials and the video we watched was about people in poverty going to landfills to gather materials to make musical instruments, I will be making a musical instrument that is made of repurposed materials for the people who are in need and would like to play a musical instrument. Ideally, we would give the instruments to the people who live in HIPC's, and to families who are in poverty. To be able to make an instrument, I must gather ideas for my product. Then from then, we can sketch design ideas and continue with a more detailed drawing of what our final instrument would in the end look like. Then we can gather recyclable materials that we would need to make the instrument. Also to be able to make a musical instrument out of repurposed materials I need to know what type of materials and what materials I need to make the instrument. Then I would have to have the correct measurements of the instrument to be able to make it. I can do this by using an example of a real instrument, such as the violin or ukulele. I will know if I have been successful in my product, when it matches my design specifications and plan. I can test that my proI can use to prove that my instrument has been successful is to try and use/play it, like you would to an actual instrument. Some challenges I may encounter as I am making this include of coming up with ideas for the instrument, being able to make it physically with the resources and materials SSIS has given us to make the product, and in the end-being able to play the instrument as we may not be able to get real strings, if we were making a stringed instrument. Another challenge could also be time. We are meant to finish making this design, and to make this product in a very short amount of time, which could make it very hard for us to complete all of this. Even for me, writing these 4 sections was very time consuming, and I am afraid I might not have enough time throughout this process. I will most likely know that my product has been successful by being able to play it, and by looking at the instrument, to see if it matched my design and design specifications. I will also know that it was successful by asking my peers and teacher. After we know that our product has been successful, we can always analyze what went well and what did not go so well, so if we ever do this again in the future, we will always know what we can do to improve.</div>]]></description>

         <title>Why did I choose this instrument? </title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>I chose the Xylophone because children seem to have lots of interest in playing the keyboard/piano, but I don't have the skills to make such a complicated instrument, so making a xylophone is similar to a piano. It consists of keys, and it makes a sound, because of the hole in the instrument. Because I have never made an instrument in my life before, other than a simple cardboard violin, before I learned how to play the actual violin, so my skills are very limited. I have made a shelf out of wood with my father so I know how to do woodwork, which will make it easier when I am making the xylophone. Another skill I would need to complete this is probably screwing screws into the wood, to keep the xylophone sticks in place. The mallets would be made out of string, or just wood. At SSIS we have left over wood that we can use to make the sticks of the instrument and the mallets. We would need to saw these and sandpaper them to make them to exact shape we need</div>]]></description>

         <title>Skills used when making my instrument</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Some skills used when making my instrument included sawing, sanding, filing, drilling, and screwing. I mainly used sawing because I had to saw each and every individual piece of wood for my instrument. I did this so I would have the correct and precise measurements which is very important when making an instrument that requires the correct lengths to be able to be played. Sanding played a very big role while making my instrument because if I did not sand the tips of the wood that was required for my instrument, I would have not been able to connect my instrument and I also would have not been able to screw the sides together. I used a manual sander and a machine sander. I used the manual sander to make the sides of the wood smoother and I used the machine sander to make the tips slanted so I could fit it in the size of the base. I slightly used filing on the rough edges with excess wood on it. I began to drill some holes on the sides, but I did not manage to have enough time to finish my instrument. If I had finished the instrument, I would have drilled one hole on each side that would intertwine into the hole of the other side of wood. This would connect all sides together firmly. I would have also used a drill to make the holes of where the screws would go to hold the keys down. I was considering the idea of using wood glue to connect the wood pieces together, but after asking teachers and some of my peers, we came to the conclusion that it would make the instrument less stable.</div>]]></description>

         <title>Construction process (What I had time to do)</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>1. I first gathered all the materials and supplies I needed to make my instrument.<br>2. For the wood, I had to use used pieces of wood because our unit is about repurposed materials so i looked for the wood pieces I could use in the used wood bin. <br>3. Then I measured out the pieces of wood to the lengths/widths/heights that I needed them to do with a pencil.<br>4. I measured the wood pieces a little larger than they should have been just in case I would mess up and cut it a little shorter because I could always file or sand it to the precise size I needed it to be.<br>5. After I cut the pieces of wood to the size I needed them to be, I sanded them with a manual hand held sander to make the edges a bit softer and easier to hold without getting splinters.<br>6. I then used the machine sander to make the top part of the wood pieces of the base a little bit slanted so it would fit into the other piece when we would screw them together. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>7. I would have then screwed holes into the sides of the base to be able to put screws in it to connect the base of the instrument. <br>8. After making the holes, I would have inserted the screws and connected the base together. <br>9. Then I would have placed the keys in the order that the xylophones keys would be on them.<br>10. I would then screw holes into the top and bottom of the of the xylophone keys. I would have made sure that the holes were made all the way down and seen at the other side of the key. I would have done this so I could place it onto the xylophone without it moving around constantly.<br>11. After the holes were made on every key, I would add add a screw to the base of the instrument so the key would have a form of stability when you would be playing the instrument.<br>12. Before I would place the keys, I would make the side (the side that you would not hit) with a little but of a curve on the inside which is supposed to help the resonance of the instrument when you play it. <br>13. I would then place the keys on the instrument in the correct order. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Although I did not finish my instrument, there are a few things that I would have changed during the time that I have made my instrument. <br>I would have managed my time a lot better. I missed more than 3 classes while the rest of the class had time to finish the instrument. I do realize that I could have went to work on the instrument at lunch times, but I did not know that making a xylophone would take that long. I did attend a few lunch classes, but I was not very productive. I think that if I spent less time cutting my wood, I would have gotten it done a lot faster. I think the problem I had with cutting the wood, is that while I was cutting, the wood would sometimes break in half because I cut the wood wrong and it would create pressure and make it break. I think that I had a lack of skill in using the saw which made it hard for me to get my instrument done in time. <br>I also think another change I would have made is the type of wood I used. Because my wood kept breaking continuously, I had no other choice except to use the big piece of bamboo that was in the "repurposed" bin. I did not know at the time that bamboo was hard to saw through which also made it hard for me to get my instrument done on time. <br>Before I started to make my instrument, I thought I had all the dimensions of the xylophone ready for me to build it. But when I started making the instrument, I was missing the measurements of some of the sides which made it hard for me to cut out the pieces of wood correctly the first time that I did it. <br>When I drilled my first hole, I did it without thinking because I was running out of time and so I drilled a hole into two sides at the same time, but it was extremely uneven. If I would make this instrument again, I would make sure that I would measure the correct place to drill my hole and drill each side separately to prevent accidents from happening, and to have a more even screw. </div>]]></description>

         <title>Testing Methods</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>All of these tests would hypothetically be done to the instrument if it were finished.<br><strong>1. Different notes</strong><br>I would do this test by possibly borrowing a mallet from one of the music teacher's rooms and by testing if the keys made different notes. I would want the instrument to make a specific note, but I think even making the instrument make one note would be an accomplishment. To see if  my instrument made one specific note, I would use a tuner to see if it hit any note. <br><br><strong>2. Sound test<br></strong>Different from the note test, this test is just to see if the instrument would make a sound like a drum, but by hitting the wood. I would do this by using a mallet from one of the music teacher's rooms and try hitting the keys with the mallet and testing if it would make a sound.<br><br><strong>3. Survey Question Test<br></strong>This test would be done by generating a few questions that any student from the class could answer and audio recording it to insert it into my padlet. An example of the questions could be "Does my instrument look like a xylophone" or "Can my instrument be identified as a xylophone". I could also ask a teacher who had specific knowledge of the instrument, like a music teacher, and we could interview them for some more advanced questions to help us learn how to make a better instrument the next time we possibly do this.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>The success of my instrument was very low. I did not manage to finish making my instrument in time for the due date, so I could not test the success of it. <br>Since this unit is called "Repurposed Materials"  I cannot say I completely did not have a success when making this instrument. I did use repurposed and recycled materials to complete part of my instrument. I was considering using old screws so they would be repurposed, but after contemplating, I decided that it would not be safe to use an old screw again. I used reused scraps of wood to complete my instrument, so I did have some sort of success when making my instrument. <br>As I also missed multiple classes as the rest of the class was completing the instruments, I did not manage my time well and that led me to not be able to do well on the final product. The next time I would make an instrument out of reused materials, I would first ask myself what materials I needed and the exact measurements for all of the dimensions. I would double check this many times before actually starting on my final instrument so I could be more efficient when making my instrument.<br>I did not do any tests on my instrument, which also does not allow me to test toe success of my instrument. In the future, my main goal would be to at least finish the instrument on time so I would be able to have at least some sort of testing to be done, instead of thinking of testing methods that I could be doing if my instrument was completed. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>There are multiple improvements that I would have done if my instrument were completed but my instrument is not completed, so the main improvement I would do in the future is managing my time better. When I first started making the instrument, I thought we would have a lot of time to finish making the instrument so I did it slowly instead of working to my best. I also talked too much with the people around me and with my friends which distracted me from working efficiently. I would also improve the different types of skills I used because in the instrument I chose, there is not a very big variety of skills except for the basics, sawing, screwing, drilling, and sanding. I think if I chose an instrument with higher skill requirements, but a smaller instrument, I would have been able to complete it quicker, with also being able to have a higher skill level. I think the size of the instrument I chose to do was too large which made it harder for me to find the materials for it, which gave me less time to actually work on the instrument. In the future, I would keep the instrument smaller, but still able to play it. If the instrument were smaller, it would have taken less time to saw, and it would be easier to attach the sides of the base together. <br>Another improvement that we also could make in the future, is first consulting a professional before beginning. I could have asked him/her about the main and most important aspects of the xylophone and what I definitely need to add into the xylophone that I would build to actually make it a real and functional xylophone. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>There was barely an impact from the product that I made because my instrument is not complete. The main goal I had in mind for this unit was to make a functional instrument out of only or mostly repurposed materials. If I were to give my instrument to a child that was not fortunate enough to have an instrument ((hypothetically if my instrument was complete), the child would have technically been able to play it, however since I did not test my instrument, I do not know if it makes any sounds or if it reaches a specific note. I think overall the child would have not had an impact from playing my instrument if it did not make any sounds or reach a specific note. The child could have learned the technique of how to play, but it would not be of any use if he/she cannot play notes on a xylophone. <br>I did manage to make an instrument (partly) out of reused materials, so I did partly have a success when making the instrument. I just think that in the future when I have another project like this, I should not procrastinate and I should get it done efficiently so I have something to test and write about. <br>In conclusion, I did not finish my instrument, although I did manage to make the parts that I did, all out of recycled materials. In the future I will manage my time more wisely and get more done efficiently so I will have more results that I can talk about in Criterion D. Although I did no tests, I can infer that my instrument would have looked somewhat like a xylophone, but it probably would not have been able to make any sounds which would make the instrument absolutely not useful in any way.  </div>]]></description>
