Rosa is generally harsh but does show some affection to Liesel. You can tell she wants her to succeed even just because she wanted to adopt her. I think she sometimes has flashbacks in the book about her childhood and wants to act better toward Liesel so that she has a better experience as a child.

For Christmas Mama and Papa gave Liesel 2 books. But for her birthday they could not get her anything. Rosa told Hans that he shouldn't have given her the books because it has disappointed her. This shows how Rosa wants Liesel to be happy and enjoy living with her foster parents.

Though mama is harsh on Liesel she still cares for her just in different ways. For example Mrs. Huberman at the beginning she tells Liesel to call her mama. This implies that she wants to be a mother figure to Liesel. On page 35 it says that she did love Liesel she just has a strange way of showing it. In conclusion mama cares for Liesel and wants wants Liesel to be smart.

Although Rosa is harsh on Liesel and hurts her mentally, she still cares for Liesel. This is shown because she still cares for her like cooking for her bathing her and when Liesel wouldn't bathe she was mad but it was more of her trying to help Liesel. She also never physically smacks Liesel or something like that because she cares for her.

Rosa does care about Liesle but just doesn't show it very well. For example in part one Rosa makes Liesle call her mama. Rosa also wants Liesle to go along with her to deliver the laundry meaning she likes Liesle's presence.

The flashbacks used in Part 2 are similar to the devices used in the other 2 sections by the author sounding like he is telling a foreboding story. The flashbacks keep the story interesting. It also keeps the author's thoughts organized. He did this in the earlier sections as well.

Mama can be harsh with Liesel. But this doesn't mean that she doesn't love her. When Lesiel was walking to the river with Papa Rosa was staring at them to make sure she was okay. She also yelled "are you dressed warm enough?". For Lesiels birthday her parents gave her a doll toy, it may have been broken but it was the best they could do. Although Rosa said she should be grateful for what she gave them it still meant a lot to Leisel. Every time Rosa goes to deliver the wash She brings Leisel this shows that Rosa cares about her. Rosa may not show her affection like other mothers but she loves her dearly.

Mama is usually harsh on Liesel, but she also like that for everyone she knows and loves. We figure out that she cares about Liesel and has concern for her from many different things. One of these occasions is when Liesel and Hans go out with the laundry Mama asks Liesel if she had enough clothes on because it was cold out. Based off this we can infer that Mama cares and has concern for Liesel.

Death uses many flashbacks in Part 2. One of these instances is the flashback to when Liesel kept waiting for her mom to write a letter back. We know this is a flashback because it went from Hans saying he almost wrote back as Liesel's mother. This shows how it was a flashback to a couple years prior. This is similar to the other two parts because Death also uses flashbacks to help explain something.
