Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, John Hancock, John Jay and others met three weeks after shots were fired at Lexington & Concord. They were ready to separate from England. They created the Declaration of Independence.

 The Declaration was a formal statement about the colonies independence. It was written by Thomas Jefferson.  A claim of independence modeled on Locke’s Social Contract Theory. In it a list of grievances was addressed to the King of England.

The colonists were protesting the British by throwing snowballs at them. More troops came. More colonists came. The Tea Act was passed which granted the British East India Company Tea a monopoly on tea sales in the American colonies. The Sons of Liberty were angered by the acts. This led to the Boston Tea Party. Sons of Liberty members saw British troops at Lexington & Concord and shot at them. They then regrouped and won a battle at Lexington & Concord against the British.

It started because there were many changes in alliances and the colonies wanted more land.  George Washington commands a unit that starts the war. After the war, Britain became very powerful and took over most of the conquered land.

This war was fought because everyone wanted the Ohio River Valley.  George Washington brought his men to scout out what was happening. He brought one hundred men and a native interpreter. They went and negotiated with French scouts. A native stabbed the Frenchman which started the battle. 20 slaves gathered near the Stono River.  They raided a shop for firearms and ammo. They traveled south from plantation to plantation killing owners to rebel against how they were treated.

Thomas Paine writes a pamphlet that sways the voting so most people vote for independence. Paine published the pamphlet anonymously at first after immigrating just over a year before to America. In it he fundamentally changed the colonists’ argument from one of aggrieved British citizens to idealistic revolutionaries breaking free from a broken system.
