This is the time period when African American people were fighting for their rights in America. This photo is from the Records of the U.S. Information Agency. We know this is a primary source because it is a photograph and they are primary sources. In week 5, this is an example of othering that was shown to us. This represents othering because it is when the white community was treating the black community unequal. This picture shows an integrated school. In order to get more information I did an image search and learned that it is from the civil rights movement. Because the schools are integrated, I am estimating that this is more from the 1970s time period. I know it is a primary source because it is a photo and the website I used to gather more information is a government website. I thought this photo was important to include because it shows how even though there was "othering" involved in the 1960s, the African American community overcame it. This is an inspiration that there is a way for humans to stop having the mind set of "othering".

We never want to admit that we are wrong or that we made a mistake. We always want to be on the winning side. We trust each other and we feel safe with each other so, we don’t leave out communities. But, how are communities supposed to grow if we don’t let the outsiders or “them” in? 
In conclusion, we get so comfortable with staying safe within our community bubbles. It is time to break down the walls of division and become more open to letting “them” in. It is important to remember trust and safety, but we should stop division and be more accepting."

I wanted to include this quote that I wrote for my week 5 preparation assignment because I feel like it shows how I understand "othering". I think that we should stop being so caught up in "us vs them" because that only makes a hostile living environment. If everyone could just learn to hear others instead of just listening, the world would be a better place. Just like the activity we did in class where we practiced listening to someone instead of just hearing them.
