Chapter 6 starts with the prisoners being evacuated. They had to run for hours, if they stopped, the SS would shot them dead. Running along with Elie was a boy who was getting exhausted, he gave up and stopped running but he didn't get shot, instead he was trampled to death by SS behind the prisoners. When they could finally stop running, after they covered more then 42 miles, the prisoners found them self's in a deserted village. They crawled in an old shed without its roof.

Elie and his father were tired, Elie found the snow warm like a blanket so he fell asleep but Elie and his father were afraid that if they both fell asleep, they'd both die in their sleep so they took turns. Elie went to sleep first as his father watched him awake. A kind old man made his way in the shed, named Rabbi Eliahou came asking where his son was but Elie and his father don't know where he is. During the run Elie actually saw his son abandon his father. Elizer prays that he will never do what Rabbi's son did.

The prisoners arrive at the Gleiwitz camp. Everybody was rushing in the barracks. Elizer and his father were being crushed by other prisoners on top of them. Elizer discovers that he is on top of his friend Juliek from Buna. Juliek starts playing his violin which helped Elie fall asleep, but when he wakes up he realises that Juliek is dead and his violin is smashed. After 3 days without food or water, there is another selection. When Elie's father is taken, Elie chases after his father who was selected to be killed.

The prisoners are taken to a field were a train with roofless cattle cars comes to pick them up to take them to Buchenwald. The train travels for 10 days and the prisoners aren't given any food or water. When passing through towns, civilians threw bread at the prisoners just to see them kill each other for a crumb of bread. When Eliezer sees a rich Parisian tourist in Aden throwing coins to boys they try to kill each other for the coin. Elie tells the Parisian lady to stop, she says to him, "I like to give charity. One night when Elie was asleep, a man tries to strangle Elizer to death but Meir Katz comes to save him. By the time the train finally arrives at Buchenwald, only 12 men in the cattle car were still alive and Meir Katz was one of the prisoners who died.
