Pan Asian Alliance: Confronting Anti-Asian Racism by Yee Xin Cher

The Pan Asian Alliance Club has created this Padlet to give the Lawrenceville community members a platform to share their thoughts in response to the recent shootings in two female asian owned spas in Atlanta. Anti-asian sentiment has been in America throughout history, but the past twelve months has seen a surge in hate crimes against the Asian-American community due to the negative stereotypes perpetuated from the COVID-19 pandemic. It is important that we continue to support the victims of these hate crimes and educate ourselves on the issue, to foster a safer environment on campus and in the country. All are welcome to add a relevant place to donate, informational resource, or a personal reflection below, and browse through.

One of the important ways to support trauma survivors is to check in on them. Note that checking in does not mean reaching out to every single Asian American you happen to know by chance, acquaintance, or at random. Checking in is an intimate, personal act between close, often loved ones. Note, too, that not everyone prefers to be checked in because they may need their own space to process or have other ways of processing.

Checking in makes clear to trauma survivors that others are paying attention, care about them, and can be support networks for survivors to feel seen, safe, and validated.

A few examples of checking in:
- "hey... thinking of you at this time. let me know if you ever need to talk or need anything to help you feel safe and cared for."
- "hello. this is a lot to move through. and i'm here to remind you that you are loved, incredible, and appreciated for all that you are and do."
- "hi. no pressure to respond at all. just checking in on you. i understand if you need space and time to process. if i can hold space for you i'm here to be, breathe, and listen. sending you lots of love."

Have you checked in with your family, friends, colleagues? How do you check in? How do you show that you care about your loved ones?

Of course, we're not even close to the end. We're still somewhere closer to the beginning, since we have so much work to do in order to realize our core idea in full.

After all, so often, what is simple isn't easy to achieve.

Onward then, and upward, by diving deeper downward, into the details.

One day at a time. One initiative at a time. But always with that picture in mind. And in our hearts.

Here at Lawrenceville, our ultimate purpose is "to seek the best for ALL." And an Lville education culminates in a Commencement ceremony in which we sing "America the Beautiful." Beautiful for what exactly? Well, at her/our very core,

"O beautiful for patriot dream
That sees beyond the years;
Thine alabaster cities gleam
Undimmed by human tears."

We've got a long way to go in order to get there, to realize that dream.

But with loving dedication from all of us who've sung these words and pledged our allegiance to the project of waging peace in pursuit of "Liberty AND Justice for ALL," we can get there. We must. Let's keep going, together.

PK
