The witches are responsible for Duncan's death. If Macbeth hadn't mentioned their prophecy to lady Macbeth, she would not have developed the evil plan. before he meets the witches, he was innocent, after he had thoughts of killing the king. the witches lead Macbeth down the path of evil.
