The growth mindset is extremely important as we continue to hold high expectations for our students an their achievement. Rita Pierson says it best when she says "Every child needs a champion."

I too found the video of Carol Dweck's experiment with praise enlightening. To praise a student's hard work is to praise effort, which each student is entirely in control of. Coupled with the idea of "Yet," it sends a powerful message to students that you don't need to already be intelligent to master skills and concepts in school and that they might not know them yet, but they just need to put in their best effort and understand that mastery will happen if they engage in the material consistently.

I ask them to justify their answers, expand their thoughts/ideas, and then make self-to text/world connections . I do this in part so they can think beyond the surface question and to allow them to connect with others on a deeper level.

The Carol Dweck's experiment was interesting! Praising student's for their effort and not how smart they are gives them room to grow. If they always put forth their best effort they will always be growing. It was interesting that those who got praised for being smart wanted to stay in that bubble of "being smart" and not having to give forth more effort in their work. The words that we, as teachers, use are powerful and can either make or break the students. I recommend everyone watch the "And So We Did" video. I love that these young boys were risk takers. They didn't think they had a chance at winning the game and in the end they surprised themselves. As the boys got stuck- they tried something different and found their new strategy worked. The community also rallied behind them.

I always come back to the Sesame Street Video "The Power of Yet" because it puts the power of progress into the students hands. Even if they are not at first successful the final outcome can still be achieved throw continued perseverance. This is a powerful tool and skill that our students need in order to ultimately be achieving their goals in life.

I completely agree with the idea of having to be deliberate in creating that "I can" mentality. I want students to rely on each other and to feel empowered that they can help others, rather than looking to me for the answers to everything.

I use the 5 Powerful Questions with my students all the time. Much more than the ability to recall what they have been exposed to, I want to know what their opinion is, and, even more importantly, what evidence it is based on. I also believe that everyone should be in a constant state of curiosity/learning, so being able to state what they plan to do with this information (where they plan to go with it) is also of paramount importance.

Janelle Monae's moving song "The Power of Yet" is an empowering song of hope which exhibits what a person/student/ individual can achieve if they subscribe to the growth mindset. The foundation of the song is supported by the excerpt titled "Four Methods for Developing a Growth Mindset." Within the Sesame Street song I saw Janelle Monae provide all of the characters with intentional praise. Second, she gave them a story of what was possible. Third, she framed her song to show them the important steps to success. This was indeed a well framed activity. Finally, she taught them how their minds worked. By providing oneself with the possibilities of future success, the manifestation of this soon to be success is that much easier. If people simply put one foot in front of the other and walk to their goal by improving and practicing whatever activity they desired improvement, then success cannot be far behind.

I think that the effect of praise isn't always at the forefront of our minds in the classroom. Most times, we focus simply on praising children, but not how. In the AVID training I went to this summer, my session had a great discussion about fixed vs. growth mindset, and we actually watched the video about Panyee FC then too. The type of feedback we give our students, especially praise, can either affirm or encourage. If we only praise students in an affirming way, they may be less likely to take risks or step out of their comfort zone. But if we were to praise our students in a way that encourages them, they will eventually push themselves a little harder because they will know they are capable. As teachers, we should all have a growth mindset in terms of our students' success, but we should also instill such a mindset in our future leaders.

Quite interesting how a fixed mindset worked both ways (Dweck's study). It should seem obvious to us that a student who thinks they are no smart will not succeed, BUT it was a novel concept that those who are fixed to think they are smart will end up making mistakes. Too much pressure to prevent failure and achieve perfection ended up bitting them in the bum.

I think it's hard for any student to develop a growth mindset under the current system of curriculum. The deadlines for county assessments make it nearly impossible for teachers to take the time to get through all of the material, let alone take the time to make sure students understand it. I feel like when my students fail or don't understand a concept, I don't have time to go back and encourage them to try again, change their mindset and that they will understand if they put forth effort. We need to change the hectic pace of curriculum first, then talk growth mindset.

I was stuck by this statement in the "Power of Belief" video, Hard work, focus, and persistence are a by product of a growth mindset. In order to get our students to reach these products we must foster this fluid mindset in our every day instruction and value that setbacks are truly a part of growth.

I liked the article connecting the 8 SMP's to a growth mindset. There is so much power in teaching those non content based skills and actually allowing kids opportunities to struggle/ grapple with tricky concepts. Sometimes as teachers we're too quick to swoop in and "rescue" struggling students which denies opportunities to build resolve and foster the attitude that they can overcome challenges. We need to step back sometimes and allow students to be their own saviors. Its in those moments of struggling and overcoming that the concept of a growth mindset is truly reinforced.

One of the common threads I am noticing through all of these videos is the natural potential of students and what we can do to draw that potential out of them. The children who started the football team in South Thailand were able to conceive an idea and bring it to completion with self-determination. Because our students are not always self-determined to be successful in the classroom, it makes sense to find the ways to draw that determination out of them through questioning and providing opportunities for success. The questions from "5 powerful questions teachers can ask" really require the students to do the leg-work on learning, but provide the motivation to get there.

I liked the Identifying Narratives article very much. This is particularly true, and perhaps easier to get to in English, because we're often dealing with narratives in terms of the literature we teach. Part of what we all do is "develop a narrative of excellence," in each child (or try to as much as we can), through praise, reinforcement, respecting and valuing our differences as well as our similarities, etc. In my classroom, the idea that "teaching is about connecting with people...stressing courage, humility, integrity and kindness in spirit," is the very core of what I do and how I do it. We make people here, not just data, but if we are successful, then both turn out well.

The documentary video "And So We Did" is a great metaphor for our students' struggle. The boys on the floating village did not let their circumstances, where they were from, or any other limitations stop them from learning and excelling at soccer. Similarly, we need to help our students understand that their background does not dictate who they have the potential to become.

Understanding your students is important. It is never good to start as adversaries in education. In "Every Child Needs a Champion," Ms. Peirson was trying to get out to us as teachers that we need to show that we are people too and that we make mistakes like the students do. And we, as edcuators, need to convince students that we do want the best for them and to take chances in order to get better and to succeed.

I'm reminded of Shelley Harford's book club last year in which we read about a man who researched why some students succeed and others struggle, and the main difference was tenacity. These simple 5 questions are general enough to ask in any lesson, any situation, any level student and still hit the higher level mark with inquiry. My first year teaching I always graded with "minuses," but for the past two years or so, I grade all my papers with "pluses" to help students not feel so discouraged. Exercising that large muscle in our heads, called the brain, is a new concept that can assist the struggling learner. Using growth mindset to show students how their efforts & mistakes can be learning tools and to preserve allows their intellect to continue to develop.

I find that asking open ended higher level questions can really engage the students. At first it's important to allow students to partner and share their ideas if they are not comfortable sharing in a whole class setting initially as this helps to give them confidence and affirm their thinking. I think that it is important to show the kids that you are human and make mistakes as well. I own any mistakes that I make as a teacher and show the students how I am learning to be better at that certain thing that I messed up. I personally hated when teachers would screw up and be like oh, I was seeing if you were paying attention...right...just own it. On another topic, I love the positive referrals. I did not think that hs kids would buy into this, but I have kids who I had last year come and show me their referral and it shows how proud they are of it. So praise works!

I found the Identity Narratives article to be very relatable to what I witness in my classroom. I find that many of my students feel as though they "are stuck" in their situations. I think the more that we create "narratives of accomplishment" for our students the more successful they will be. In the article, Amelia Clune states that by creating "narratives which explore examples of courage, humility, integrity, and kindness in spirit -- we are modeling how those principles can be applied to a common way of life, giving children the confidence to open up in order to connect with anyone, regardless of cultural beliefs or customs. In doing so, we are fostering a shared understanding of what it means to be a member of today’s pluralistic society." I was not as impressed with the article on Assessment, Choice and the Learning Brain. I hoped to gain insight into new ideas and research, but (at least for me) there was nothing new here- Timely feedback, mastery objectives, alternative assessments, etc. are all things I (along with all of the other English teachers) use all the time. This article didn't provide any concrete examples, except a weak link to assessment-tic-tac-toe, a very old idea. It still has it's place, but I was hoping for NEW examples and concepts here.

I like the Standards for Mathematical Practice because I agree that they reward hard work and perseverance more than just being "good" at math. I tell my students all the time not to give up when they get frustrated, and they get rewarded for their perseverance. I think that students in Math easily get discouraged, so teaching them the growth mindset would be very helpful.

I felt this was interesting because we as physical educators focus more on the form of certain tasks as oppose to the end result. Of course we have athletes and talented students but I am always looking to challenge the student who hasn't played or is to afraid to show off that certain skill level they have. I feel like praising a student on effort and trying is more useful and productive than praising some one for a positive end result.

We are in a culture and society of "If at first you don't succeed, I'm not good at it!" With a lot of our students, they still haven't learned how to be patient or endure a difficult task. As we teach them this difficult ability, we have to remind them it is o.k. to not get things right, and keep trying until we do get it right.

I also feel that there's a fine line between enabling a student to continue in their current mindset and encouraging them to break out and even consider the fact that they can be successful. We so often measure success in academic parameters. Perhaps the powers that be should look at a paradigm

shift to look at the personal growth aspect.

I was first introduced to the growth mindset during my internship as a distance educator partnered with Florida Virtual Schools. So many of my students have repeated Geometry (some of them more than once) and they felt defeated before they even walked into my classroom. I am trying to instill in them that they have plenty of prior knowledge and it's okay to make mistakes--I make mistakes all the time. The important thing is to keep trying.

A. Butler "Growth Mindset." Students need to intrinsically believe that their capacities can be developed, rather than stay in a fixed state. I think that successful experiences that scaffold in difficulty over time ease students into this mindset without overwhelming them upfront.

Alnd so we did.. Great story! One day NSA lost it's AC - it became very warm and many people just couldn't do their jobs - but the agents from GBHS had no trouble... that winter the heating broke - the Meade, SP, NC, and Broadneck grads froze, but the GB people just zipped up their hoodies and kept going. Carol Dweck's video about the experiment with praise was very interesting. It reminded me about how important it is to praise effort. So many students believe if it is hard that they cannot do it. Praising students' effort can help encourage them to continue to try on hard tasks and learn that it isn't necessary about ability but effort.

I remind students that if they knew everything or could do all of it right the first time, then they wouldn't need to learn anything which of course is not true. I feel if your positive with a student and praise them on there effort they will take more ownership in trying to do their best. I also think praising a student for the effort makes the student feel more comfortable with you as a teacher.

I'm not a huge fan of Sesame Street, but the video is important for kids to see. I hear so many students say they just don't get it, or they don't get math, or they are bad at math. I wish more of them would say that they just don't get it yet, but that if they keep trying they will be successful. I feel like so many students don't have the stick-to-itiveness that they need to be successful.

I believe the Power of Praise to be very true. I have seen this study multiple times and believe it to be true. Praise can be very powerful as long as it is deserving. If praise gets overused or misused then it takes away from its significance.

After reading "Growth Mindset: A Driving Philosophy, Not Just A Tool" I came to the conclusion that many of the teachers at GB are teaching just like that. Countless students discuss how various teachers are using specialized grouping in order to diversify instruction to meet the needs of all levels of students within one class. Many elective classes are varied as far as levels go and it is essential to come up with activities that motivate every level without segregating too much. I constantly need to assess students to group together at varying levels within the same class and be ready to change it as the topics change.

We watched <em>And So We Did</em>  and thought about ways we could use problem solving techniques in our classroom, and relate them to real life experiences.  The students in the video were deeply motivated to complete their goals, a difficult attitude to inspire in our students at times.  We are wondering about ways to make things like reading and algebra something more purposeful and meaningful so that students will be motivated to pursue academics and all forms of learning outside of the classroom.  The typical answers like project based learning, PBIS, student choice, inquiry methods, etc. sometimes work, but are not as powerful as the drive to be successful exhibited in the video.  The kids were intrinsically motivated, because of a deficit in their community and driven by their love of soccer.  What drives our kids?

In "Creating A Culture Of 'Can'" I have experienced that it may take more than one semester to move a student from the level of "help me" to a level of "let me". Not every student moves at the same pace or has the personality to allow themselves those opportunities at the same time. All students have the opportunity to move along the continuum but at different speeds. I feel like my role is to acknowledge their pace and help them at those varying degrees until they have accomplished the "let me".

5 questions ---I asked "what do you think' in my Nutrition class in response to a video clip on the rising obesity in the U.S. Sometimes I really can get 100% attention! Especially when it is about them and their opinion instead of me and mine!-

Loved this vid. I also love that the kids didn't win the tournament, and yet the struggle, the game, the experience were all worth it. I believe the power of yet video to be similar to students saying "I cant". If they believe in themselves and put in an honest effort they can turn the "I cant" into "I can" it just takes time and belief.
