The main theme of "Their Eyes Were Watching God" is independence and self-fulfillment. Janie, the protagonist has unfortunate luck with her relationships with men, for example, her first husband Logan was abusive and her second husband Joe died an untimely death. Her rushed relationships ultimately led her to the conclusion that she needed to be fulfilled in her love life through self-fulfillment and a loving partner. Additionally, Janie discovers that there is no single relationship that is entirely perfect, and that there must be an overlap between independence and codependence in the protagonist's relationships.

Zora Neale Hurston was born January 7th 1891 in Notasulga, Alabama even though she claimed to be born in 1901 in Eatonvillie Florida she was in fact 10 years older at the time of her move to Eatonvillie. Hurston grew up in the first all black township which played a big part on how she viewed her life in a positive way. She lived a very good childhood till her mother died when she was 13. Her father soon remarried to a young woman whom she seemed to get really aggressive with often. With her current situation she found it hard to finish school leading her to leave and join Gilbert & Sullivan traveling troupe as a maid to the lead singer. In 1917, she ended up in Baltimore at the age of 26 still without her high school diploma. Needing to present herself as a teenager to qualify for free public schooling, she lopped 10 years off her life–giving her age as 16 and the year of her birth as 1901.From that moment forward, Hurston would always present herself as at least 10 years younger than she actually was which she pulled off well.
