Firearms & Suicide in the Military-Connected Community: 5 Things Medical Professionals Need to Know, powered by PsychArmor, is narrated by two clinical psychologists. In this short, engaging course, Dr. Ted Bonar and Dr. Heidi Kraft discuss the importance of including conversations about lethal means accessibility – specifically firearms – during safety planning in all types of clinical encounters. They define the scope of the problem, dispel some widely held misconceptions, and explain why military and Veterans gun owners have unique beliefs about weapons, crisis and safe storage. Clinicians will understand the importance of the intersection between military culture and the culture of firearm owners, and approach their Veteran patients with confidence around these critically important conversations.

"Military social work, as a field of practice and research, is critical to our relevance as social workers, to the advancement of new career options, and in our leadership among the helping professions. This does not mean that we endorse war or aggression, but rather that we extend meaningful help to those who have been affected. This is a moment in history when we can reassert our central influence as a pivotal healing profession in the midst of wartime and in the aftermath by promoting a vigorous social work research agenda and appropriate training to effectively prepare military social workers" (CSWE, 2010, p. 2).

The Seven C’s Model of Resilience

The seven C’s model of resilience was first published by the American Academy of Pediatrics in 2006. It adds to their model by emphasizing “coping” which prepares one to recover, and “control” which gives one the sense that choices make a real difference.

Each “C” is a critical element that parents, schools, communities, youth programs, and professionals can support in youth. The C’s are all interrelated — forming almost a net of resilience-building strategies. To learn more about each “C”, follow the links provided.
