The first essential strategy is tapping in students cultural capital. By incorporating multiculturalism into the classroom, you can represent all students while introducing them to the world around them. It works hand in hand with #4 because it help establish a bond between students and the teacher. It allows students to feel seen.
Number 2 is another crucial strategy to incorporate into instruction because it exposes students to real world problems/examples. Teaching prepares students for life outside of the classroom. By using relatable content, it allows students to make meaningful connections and open new perspectives.

1. Make learning contextual-When students are able to connect and relate the text to their personal lives and their cultures, it makes it easier for the students to retain and understand what they are learning. It also allows for the students to connect emotionally to the literature.
2. Consider your classroom setup- The classroom should reflect their actual students, this meaning the choice of literature should have representation of who is in the class. Diverse book selections that are from different cultures and backgrounds allow for the students to feel connected to what they are reading about.

Danielle McMillan
Linda Sajous
Madison Luttinger
Livia Guerrero
The two different strategies we found most helpful for introducing literacy in the classroom is make learning contextual. We found this to be important to incorporate into the classrooms. By incorporating activities and multicultural texts in the classroom and finding ways your students can relate to them will help them understand the information better and want to participate in class discussion more. Incorporating popular culture is the second skill we found beneficial to include in our classrooms. This goes hand and with forming relationships with your students. It is important to find out your students interests and incorporate some of their favorite media into your classroom instruction. This builds a positive environment that students want to participate and learn in.
