I. Community Service Learning

C This is a photograph of a volunteer working with the Peace Corps to teach Kenyan locals carpentry skills.

D. I chose a photo of a volunteer because of how valuable volunteer work is to community service learning. To dedicate one's free time to teach those in need definitely embodies what it is to be a servant to a community. In this photo, a man is working under the JFK-founded Peace Corps in Kenya to teach locals specialized skills that would help their community. In the present, carpentry is a solid business in Kenya, as there are many carpentry companies in the country.

C. This is a photograph of a bronze bust of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. that is on display in the Smithsonian Museum.

D. This artifact represents leadership in every sense of the word. It could be argued that Dr. King was the most important leader for the modern United States. Dr. King unified an entire race to accomplish his goal to achieve civil liberties and end discrimination in our country. Without Dr. King's leadership, as it was displayed at historical events such as the Montgomery Bus Boycott and the March on Washington, our country could possibly look very different today.

C. This is a photo of former prime minister of the Soviet Union Nikita Khrushchev. He served as president from 1958-'64.

D. I chose to use this photo of Khrushchev because of the meaning behind his role in Soviet history. While he was the leader of their nation, he also served as the First Secretary to the Communist Party. While US citizens have mixed opinions around communism, it can be agreed that the implementation of this ideology in the nation built a community from a very diverse society. What was once a nation with mixed ideas became a single-party structure of government that built a devout community of citizens that embraced communism at the time.

IV. Scholarship

C. This is a flyer advocating in support of equal opportunity that was used in 2003 amid Supreme Court discussions regarding affirmative action.

D. I chose to use this flyer as it pertains to Scholarship because it aligns with the values that Scholarship holds. Higher education teaches students to think critically, research, and develop their communication skills. Another value is to understand social problems, and I believe that this poster does just that. The poster, sanctioned by the NAACP, is advocating for affirmative action, or the favoring of historically discriminated groups. Discrimination was ever-present in 21st century college admissions and Title IX debates, and to recognize this issue and call for action expresses a key value for Scholarship.

V. Citizenship

C. This is a replica punch card that was distributed to residents to collect statistics for the 1900 Census. This card has locations to designate a citizen's race, sex, age, and citizenship status, among other categories.

D. I chose to use this census card for the Citizenship pillar because of the modern implications that census' has in modern America. The most recent census in 2020 was surrounded by controversy. President Trump was accused of using the census to find undocumented immigrants to deport from the country to promote the Republican agenda that favored closed borders. One difference between the 1900 census and the 2020 census is that those that participated in the former were encouraged to note their citizenship status, where the most recent census was not permitted to ask that question. It is interesting to see how these polls have changed from a statistic-oriented poll to one with more politically charged intentions.
