For example, "There was music from my neighbor's house through the summer nights. In his blue gardens, men and girls came and went like moths among the whisperings and the champagne and the stars" (Fitzgerald 21) This is Nick describing what Gatsby's parties look like. It sounds so fancy and so elaborate. Nick also describes how Gatsby prepares for his parties. For example, "... a corps of caterers came down with several hundred feet of canvas and enough colored lights to make a Christmas tree of Gatsby's enormous garden. On buffet tables, garnished with glistening hors d'oeuvre, spiced baked hams crowded against salads of harlequin designs and pastry pigs and turkeys..." (Fitzgerald 21). Nick uses such fancy words to describe Gatsby's parties because there really is no other way to describe them. For example,  as Nick narrates, "For a while I lost sight of Jordan Baker,... because she was a golf champion, and everyone knew her name" (Fitzgerald 31). Also,  as Nick said about Tom, "..., but I felt that Tom would drift on forever seeking, a little wistfully, for the dramatic, turbulence, of some irrecoverable football game" (Fitzgerald 3). In the book, they also talk about Meyer Wolfshiem. As Gatsby tells Nick, " He's the man who fixed the World's Series back in 1919" (Fitzgerald 39). This was one year before the 20's technically started but it still applies. This was one of the darkest chapters in baseball history. These examples show 3 of the popular sports in the 20's.
