Richard Benjamin Speck was born on December 6, 1941, in the village of Kirkwood, Illinois, about 200 miles west of Chicago. The seventh of eight children, Speck was born into a tumultuous low-income family, and he spent most of his youth growing up in the Dallas, Texas, suburbs where he regularly had run-ins with law enforcement due to his excessive drinking and penchant for public disturbances. Speck received his first major prison sentence in July 1963 at the age 21 when he was convicted of forging a signature on a stolen check and for the robbery of a grocery store. Originally due to serve three years, he was paroled after 16 months only to return to his cell a week later on charges of aggravated assault and a parole violation.

How Brudos was caught (Axel Martinez)

Police interview students about the murders, where one of the students reportedly went out with a strange man claiming to be a veteran looking for a date, during the date, the man referenced the dead women found in the river, police told her to set up a meeting with him if he calls again, where the police would be waiting for him. That’s when they were able to get a search warrant on him and saw many pieces of evidence in his home, concluding Brudos was the killer.

Richard Speck’s mother was very religious and his father worked as a packer at Western Stoneware in Monmouth. In 1947, when Speck was six years old, his father passed away due to a heart attack. Speck was reported as very close with his father so his loss affected him greatly.

While Monte Ralph Rissel, he wrote a 461 page handwritten manuscript detailing all his murders. He became eligible for parole in 1995 but never succeeded. He was held in two different prisons; currently incarcerated at Augusta Correctional Center, and is currently incarcerated at Pocahontas State Correctional Center in Virginia.

Rissell was a sexual deviant at a very early age(committed his first rapes at the young age of only 14.)

Arrested for one of his crimes while still in High School, Rissell was sent to an institution. He was extremely smart with an IQ of 120 so he could trick the psychiatrists in to believing he was getting better.

He is currently serving five life sentences.

Brudos was believed to have killed a woman in 1967. In may of that year he has stalked and followed the girl because he liked the way she was dressed and way heavily infatuated with her shoes in particular. Brudos broke into her house after she went to sleep and began to strangle her to the point of unconsciousness. He then raped her. He got up after and took the shoes and left. He wasn’t connected to this crime till much later.

Until he was 7 his life was “normal” and he was in a loving home. But after his parents split his mother moved them to California and remarried which led to him and his siblings being neglected and payed little attention to. He had a deep hatred for his father and his stepfather so he didn’t have any role models or people to teach him right from wrong or discipline him for all of the bad things he got into from such s young age. This probably affected the whole course of his life and can most likely contribute to what made him into the killer he was.

Richard Speck was suspected to be involved in multiple other crimes after being jailed for theft and check fraud. When Speck found work in carpentry, a 65-year-old woman named Virgil Harris was raped and robbed in her home, and a couple days later a local barmaid was found bested to death in Speck’s local cavern. Speck continuously got out of questioning before police found some of Harris’s items in his hotel room. Later on, Speck found work on a ship, and wherever Speck was on the boat, bodies would turn up. In Indiana 3 girls went missing and once again Speck avoided all confrontations with the police. Then in Michigan Speck was thought to be tied to the murders of 4 other females between the ages of 7 and 60 years old.

His father died when he was 6 and his mother moved them to Dallas, they bounced house to house living in poorer neighborhoods. He refused to wear glasses that he needed and would not speak in class due to anxiety. He had to repeat his eighth grade year and dropped out of his first year in high school. While in Dallas, Speck had 37 arrests for drunk and disorderly behavior.

Jerry was known as the “Lust Killer”. He committed several murders, attempted abductions, as well as other assaults. When Jerry was spending time at the psychiatric ward he was still allowed to attend school. Unfortunately, this didn’t help as his bizarre obsessions got him discharged from the military. He was arrested because he was setup by the police and a student at Oregon State University. The student called Brudos and set up a meeting at her dorm, he agreed. But when he arrived the police were waiting for him. He only confessed to 3 or the 4 murders because one of the bodies was never found.

Jerome Henry Brudos was born on January 31, 1939 in South Dakota. His family moved around a few times while he was growing up spending time in Oregon, California and South Dakota. Brudos had a strained relationship with his overbearing mother. Brudos discovered a pair of high heels when he was five years old marking the beginning of fascination with women’s footwear. When his mother found him wearing the shoes she took them away and destroyed them. His fetish for women’s shoes continued to grow and he later stole women’s underwear from neighboring homes. As he grew he developed a dark fantasy life which involved violence against women. Brudos began acting on these disturbed thoughts.

While Berkowitz was an intellectual child he often got into trouble, which showed early signs of Violent behavior. “Berkowitz got involved in petty larceny and pyromania.” Pyromania would be a major indicator from the McDonald triad, which indicates Berkowitz could’ve became a serial offender or a character of violent nature. It only became worse after his adoptive mother died , as a result Berkowitz grew distanced from his adoptive father and stepmother. Berkowitz then proceeded to Joint the army. He became an excellent marksman, which would later aid him in his killings.

It appears that Brudos passed away of natural causes on March 26th, 2006. At the time of his imprisonment, Brudos was the longest incarcerated inmate in the history of the Oregon Department of Corrections.

Speck's stepfather was an alcoholic, and would often abuse all eight children by laying his hands on them. This drove Speck down a troubled path, leading him to juvenile delinquency and alcohol abuse.
