There is a lot to see, enjoy and know in the homeland, as the island's natives are called. Only in terms of beaches, there are a hundred options, not to mention that each one has its particularity, whether related to nature, visitors or activities. And there's the story, told through the forts explored on schooner rides, the rock paintings hidden on the Campeche Island, the Azorean villages of Ribeirão da Ilha and Santo Antônio de Lisboa.
To understand the geography of the city, which mixes beaches, dunes, lagoons and mountains, climb the natural viewpoints, such as Morro da Cruz. When it is time to dive into the joyful spirit of the island, all paths lead to Lagoa da Conceição. Those looking for excitement, look at the Jurerê paradores, which offer buzz day and night.

Some say that Florianópolis has 42 beaches. Others say there are a hundred. What matters is that the island offers options for all tourists. To the east, the point is for surfers and flirtation that rolls loose on Mole and Joaquina beaches. In the North are the popular Brava beaches, also a stronghold of surfing; and Jurerê Internacional, with "paradores" - as beach huts are called -, bars and nightclubs. The moneyed kids have a party at sunset in houses like P12 and Posch. In the south, the rustic fishing villages attract those seeking peace, tranquility and good restaurants such as the beaches of Pântano do Sul and Ribeirão da ilha.

Before being called Florianópolis, the capital already had several names. It was called Porto dos Patos by the Dutch and Meiembipe by the Carijós Indians. It was also the island of Santa Catarina, Nossa Senhora do Desterro and just Desterro. In 1894, it started to have the name it has today, in honor of President Floriano Peixoto.
