KIDS CELEBRATE

This book is more of an instructional text book, for that reason, I would not suggest using it to read cover to cover with your class but to use it in bits and pieces. "Kids Celebrate" has 100s of special days to celebrate along with activities to honor them. The first few pages is a table of context which lists special days and holidays of multiple cultures organized by date. Including Chinese New Year, the New Year that we celebrate, days to honor native Americans, and the list goes on. These exerts would be a good introductory on the holiday since the article explains the importance. Then other books could be introduced to elaborate. Any activities for this reading would come from the book itself, since it has activities and arts and crafts designed for kids and adults alike.

Showcasing holidays from around the world "Kids Around the World Celebrate" explains the holidays and the beliefs behind some of them while suggesting activities to do for them. This book only provides an overview so in order to dive deeper into the subject other texts that are specifically about a certain holiday would need to be used.

THE DAY OF THE DEAD

We follow two boys as they celebrate the Day of the Dead, creating sugar skulls, making delicious foods, and of course spreading yellow marigold flower petals so that the dead can find their way home to celebrate. At the end of the book the author gives extra information about the Day of the Dead. This book adds to the discussion of different cultures by being bilingual. The class can end by having a Day of the Dead party to honor this holiday, baking special foods, making sugar skulls, and dancing the day away. This activity would not only make children more excited to be reading about the holiday but it will also give them an appreciation for the holiday.

LIGHTING OUR WORLD

Instead of focusing on describing random important celebrations of certain cultures, this book looks specifically at light. The author explores how light plays an important role in celebrations around the world. I find this outlook very interesting. Children will be shown that even though cultures may have different celebrations, they all have a common origin.
An interesting discussion question after reading this text would be what light means to the students. Perhaps after the discussion the student could either write a story about the importance of light, or alternately paint a picture. Another great activity would be to have students create their own holiday celebrating light, or a value that is important to them.
