At the age of two, she was engaged to Francois, Dauphin of France, who was two as well. It was cancelled three years later in 1521.

Mary was crowned on 1 October 1553, her will was to restore England to Catholicism. At first she was beloved by most of England. She married Prince Philip of Spain in 1554. She never had any kids and never conceived a Catholic heir. The crown later passed to her Protestant half-sister Elizabeth (who she nearly executed).

During Mary's five-year reign, around 280 Protestants were burned at the stake for refusing to convert to Catholicism, and a further 800 were exiled. This religious persecution earned her the nickname 'Bloody Mary' among subsequent generations.

Mary died at St James’s Palace on 17 November 1558 and Elizabeth ascended her throne.
