Before, I thought rhetoric was mainly used in debates or essays to show who had the best argument, but now I see it everywhere: insocial media posts, advertisements, and everyday conversations. Learning about audience awareness and rhetorical purpose helped me notice how language changes depending on who we are speaking to and what emotions or values we want to express, in class we analyzed how a single ad uses completely different language for young people on social media versus older audiences on TV, and my classmates’ examples and ways of expressing their ideas showed me how carefully rhetorical choices are made to reach different groups effectively. A current example of powerful rhetoric is how animal shelters use heartwarming images of pets and emotional storytelling to encourage people to adopt animals, donate, or volunteer.
