Do you think love can withstand intense stress; moreover, can it withstand the stress of building a new nation? Eliza Schuyler and Alexander Hamilton take on these challenges in Love and War, the sequel to Alex and Eliza. This book is like I, Eliza Hamilton. They are both historical fiction, but Love and War is less factual and much more playful than its counterpart. I, Eliza Hamilton focuses on more of the political side and what role Eliza played in history whereas Love and War focuses more on her love life. Overall it was a fantastic novel that I really enjoyed. I was rather shocked when Alex let Mr. Earl come stay with himself and Eliza. I was again shocked when Mr. Earl seemed to be flirting with Eliza. Luckily it didn’t go any further. I was so sure Hamilton and Mrs. Childress lost the case by the way everyone was acting, but they won! I understand their behavior now as well. The book definitely require a bit of reading between the lines at times, but I enjoy that. There are so many excellent one liners intertwined in this book as well. Some were more on the romantic side, such as “She trusted him with her heart, and she knew that his heart was hers alone, in that she was fully confident”. Some of the other one liners were more geared toward the revolution and political changes that are being made in this era. The author of this book, Melissa de la Cruz, has written many other books such as The Descendants Saga, which is geared more towards younger kids, Blue Bloods and The Queen’s Assassin duology. Ms. de la Cruz has a #1 New York Times Best Selling Author award, as well as #1 Publishers weekly and #1 IndieBound bestselling author. One super sweet review on this book was by Joelle, who is a reader and a wattpad author. She said “I’ve really enjoyed this series so far and can’t wait for the third book. I love history and YA so this was super appealing to me. I liked the focus of this novel on the early stages of the Hamiltons’ young marriage (even though the author took liberties with the timeline for their children). There were possibly a few slower moving chapters in this novel versus the first, but it didn’t take away from my overall enjoyment of the book. I hope all you Hamilton fans have checked this series out! This book was pretty good, if not slightly anticlimatic, so if you want a quick and easy read, I suggest this book for you.
