The show I’m watching right now is Boy Meets World. Staying home allowed me to start watching all the Disney Channel shows I missed out on as a kid like Girl Meets World, etc. After watching Girl Meets World, I decided to watch the first show Boy Meets World. Right now, I’m on season 3 out of 7.

journal: how my home life has been affected by the pandemic and quarantine

Since going into quarantine, my daily life has changed drastically. Before lockdown, I would go out to the park or the library if I was bored at home. During lockdown, I wasn’t able to do that, Instead, I went on bike rides in my neighborhood or reread Percy Jackson and Heroes of Olympus a million times over and over again. I was also able to watch older movies with my parents over lockdown like The Mighty Ducks trilogy and The Sandlot. I also really got into horror and started reading IT. I watched both movies and also binged Stranger Things a few times over quarantine too. I was able to do a lot of the things I wasn’t able to have time for before. I also baked a lot and made homemade boba and frappuccinos from home. Aside from catching up on movies and shows and baking, I also had time to read books. Since quarantine I finished books like the Divergent series, Percy Jackson and the Olympians series for the millionth time, Heroes of Olympus for the millionth time, and The Perks of Being a Wallflower. In August, we were able to go to the Smoky Mountains in a secluded cabin-like house with my cousins. We went sightseeing while also being socially distanced. We went again in December with the rest of my dad’s side family in a bigger cabin and we were able to go to more places since they started opening up for people. At this point in May, more than a year of being in a pandemic, going out without a mask just seems weird now.

Over quarantine, I was able to broaden my music taste and listen to new artists that I have heard of but was never really into. I got into singers like New Hope Club, Taylor Swift, Johnny Orlando, R5, and 5 Seconds of Summer. Over the many months of adding new songs I discovered and liked, my playlist has expanded to exactly 27 hours long

Over the summer, I was on FaceTime with my friends and I got an Apple News notification about the death of the late actor Chadwick Boseman, who starred as T’Challa or the Black Panther in the Marvel Films. I immediately told my parents as we are all really great Marvel Fans. Chadwick’s death hit the Marvel Universe really hard, as no one. else can replace him as the Black Panther.

journal: if i could go back in time, what would i tell myself a year ago?

What would I tell myself a year ago versus now? Well, a year ago, I was sure that we would be done and back to normal by July or August. I was convinced that I would be able to see Harry Styles in August and go out to restaurants in September. If I could go back in time, I would probably reference a Vine and just say “Honey, you got a big storm coming”. My old self wouldn’t understand, but I would be hinting that things would actually get so much worse. The cases would spike, the Black Lives Matter movement would get bigger, the concert would get cancelled, etc. I also would probably tell myself how fast the year would go by. When I turn 14 in December, I would still feel like I turned 13 the day before. The year would go by in a snap, faster than Thanos could wipe out half the universe. It was like all time had stopped but we were still going about our everyday quarantine lives. I feel like all of our past selves should not know exactly how much worse things are going to get, but at least have a general idea that things will not get better for a long time. I need to save my past self some suspense for the future.

the faint sound of wonderland playing from the stereo
the children laughing in the water
the parents calling for their children
it’s time to go home
it’s time to leave the painting-like skies

it’s time to let go of this moment

- It hasn’t really, except for the fact that I’m at home a lot more.

Last Spring Break, I was supposed to go for Pilgrimage in Mecca, but we had to cancel our trip because of the virus. We stayed home for months until August, when we took a few days’ trip to North Carolina, where we rented a small house in the Smokies. We stayed pretty distanced from everyone else and there weren’t even that much people there, anyway. In December, we went to the Tennessee side of the Smokies, where we rented a big cabin for almost my entire dad’s side family. We stayed for about a week before coming back. Although more places were opening up, we were still pretty distanced from other tourists and families. During Spring Break, we drove up to New Jersey and stayed with my mom’s sister. We visited Philadelphia and Princeton. Instead of flying out to other places like we usually do, COVID has us take more road trips and get closer as a family.
