The text extract „The Arrangers of Marriage“ is from the book „The thing around your Neck“ which was written by Chimanda Ngozi Adichie and published in London in 2009. It deals with a young nigerian woman who arrives in America and meets her husband, that her aunt and uncle chose for her, for the first time.
Chiapas arrives and her husband shows her the new house in which she does not feel comfortable. Then they go to bed and in the morning she wakes up while her new husband lies on her. Chinaware feels crowded and uncomfortable in the situation. Ofodile stands up and goes in the bathroom. Chinaware should call his uncle and her aunt to say that everything is alright. They say that Ofodile is like a won in the lottery because he is a doctor in America and that Chinoza should be thankful. Besides, Ofodile changes Chinazas name to the English name Agatha Bell without skiing her. Ofodile explains that an english name is easier for the Americans than the Nigerian Chinoza is shocked about her new name because it do not have any common grounds with her real name.
